Not really. Straight weight oils are still quite common in industry. They are commonly used in power generation and pumping systems where the engine runs at a constant load and temperature for extended periods of time. In this type of application there is no need for a multi-viscosity oil, it serves no purpose. Straight weight oils may not serve a practical purpose in mobile equipment but they do in other industry's.

I'm always thinking automotively, not stationary.

15w40 is pretty much standard recommended diesel lube anymore, FWIW.

that doesn't mean some man'sdont recommend or some end user make use of something else but you know what I mean

I was un convinced by previous use of synthetics in my bikes and chainsaws and posted this question a while ago ,Toward the use of 0-40 synthetic in a 90hp tractor working in up to -40 .
It was outrageously expensive but i have to admit on some mornings when i know i would have to use a propane heater on the oil pan to even get it to fire it would start without ether and was good all summer in 30+ too ,Long days baling and cultivating .
So i have to eat my words and give it a thumbs up ?

Quite a topic in the shop now ? We renently did a major overhaul on a 1967 CAT dozer and most oil accross the board calls for 30 apart from final drives 80/90 .I say we have 15/40 and HY tran and other heavier hyd's in stock so use it,Theres no high tech stuff in that thing ,I think that they call for 30 because they did not have the quality multi purpose oils that we have now when this machine was made in winter the Hy-Tran would be better than 30 ,But my father and some of the older operators dissagree ,Large fleet operators agree with me ?
