Not really. Straight weight oils are still quite common in industry. They are commonly used in power generation and pumping systems where the engine runs at a constant load and temperature for extended periods of time. In this type of application there is no need for a multi-viscosity oil, it serves no purpose. Straight weight oils may not serve a practical purpose in mobile equipment but they do in other industry's.
