Hidden fawn

Found this little fawn the other day on my property just a little away from the house. Saw the mama trotting off some distance away and the little guy looked lost. Then he just hunkered down in the clump of brush in the middle of the first pic. You cant really see him in the first one unless you know right where he is. He looked to be only a day old. My son went back 45 min later and he was gone. Mom came back for him Im sure.

They sure do hide good -- I remember almost tripping over one once before it scampered off. Never even knew it was there.

Yes, their coloring is great..You need to be very careful when bush-hogging in the early part of the year..The little one's won't get up in time..

The really young ones are left alone most of the time. They don't have much odor so the mother hides them and only comes back to feed them occasionally as to not attract predators. I stumbled across one a few years ago and though it had been abandoned. I didn't know what to do but thankfully I left it and did a little research. A lot of people bring them home and try to care for them, which doesn't end well for any of the involved. I could have touched the fawns nose, it simply didn't bat an eye lash. I got some great pics too but don't have any here to share.

A few years back, I got the scare of my life while mowing with my JD LX188. I was mowing the edge of a flowerbed area just next to the woods across the creek from my house, which is like a deer highway. I was mowing right of up the edge of a patch of day lillies when a sudden explosion of brown and white fur erupted less than a foot from my front right tire. It was a tiny fawn who had stayed motionless until I was on top of him. Scared me half to death! Their camoflauge is unparralleled. He scampered into the woods but I'll never forget that.

I too had the same concern, but learned that this is the normal method of care for baby and mama. The Doe forages and returns to feed the Fawn. The fawn stays motionless and concealed unless unavoidable danger ensues. Does should have or soon be dropping fawns, so if you find one like that, leave it be. Mama will return.

If he hadn't flinched I would never have known he was there, as he was in no danger of me running him over.

They always don't get up and run.If there is an early cut on the hay(around June 15) lots of fawns are killed by hay equiptment.This the main reason I don't do any bush-hogging until August.

Exactly, I've almost backed my rotary cutter over about 5 fawns while clearing brush in one location on my property. Those 5 fawns weren't all in the same year, but over about a 3-yr span. They will hide until the last instant just before you run over them. The drop and hide instinct is very strong.

Sometimes they will not move at all. Unfortunately I have accidently kill two. One with the hay mower and one with the combine. I won't go into any further details. I was sick for two days after both.

Luckily, I just missed one last year while cutting wheat, the little guy stayed put until the ever last minute. I never seen him until he finally decided that he had to go LOL. Even then, I was almost on top of him. Scared the xxxxx out of me.

I bush hog with an old 1010 John Deere. Having several close calls with fawns, I fabricated a T-bar that mounts on the front of the tractor, the T portion is as wide as the front wheels and has short lengths of chain hanging down to the ground. The chains touch the fawn causing it to bolt before the tractor wheels get to the deer.
