Tractor
8N 1952 Ford tractor
Been working on it for about 3 weeks and I still cannot get it to run. Have put in new points, plugs, coil and it still will not fire. Any suggestions on what to try next would be a lot of help.

Thanks,
Skippy Ewan

Check to see if it is getting fuel through the carb to the engine.

Yes, I cannot get no fire at the coil, plugs or points. I also have put in a condenser, resister, key switch. Should I put in a new amp meter?

What year 8n?
Front mounted dis. ? Or side mounted dis.?
Do you have 12v or 6 6v system?
Do you have 12v or 6v to the power side of the coil?

You either don't have spark or you don't have fuel. Simple
In this order remove either the coil wire or a spark plug wire lead, hold it about 1/4 inch away from ground (the engine) and crank the engine on the starter. You should see a spark jump the air gap.
Now disconnect the hose from the fuel pump and crank the engine on the starter. You should have fuel coming out on each 'pulse'.
If you have both of those and you still don't have any attempt for the tractor to fire......
A small shot of ether into the carb. Attempt to start. Does it fire? If so problem is probably in the carb unless you have a massive vacuum leak up stream.

Do not, I repeat do not check for fuel first and then for spark.
My dad spent months in a hospital because of that brain fart.

No, an amp meter is not likely the trouble (Though you may need one ..later)

Spark can be as simple as a Battery, points condenser coil and plug. A "total loss" system. That is, the battery drains as the engine runs.

Try to simplify. Are the points clean? (New points are NOT clean) Do they "make and break? Are the insulators in the right places? This can be tricky where the condensor lead is made.

Is your coil "good"? Is it connected correctly?

Have you got a volt /ohm meter? They are cheap and can confirm electrical things.

There are many "on-line" descriptions of how points /coil systems work. Read up a bit, try to find a problem. Throwing parts at it is not a wise method.

Cheers

It's a 1952 side mount 12V. This tractor was my dads and he bought it new. I have been working on it for years and this is the first time that I cannot find the problem. Thought about trading it in on a new one, but...my dad has passed and my mom is still living and she wants me to keep it. I use it to set tobacco and I am going to need it in a couple of weeks so I am starting (no I am) really getting flustered!!! I have already tried what you suggested with no luck!!!

I am going to get the meter and try that again and then read up some more on the internet. Going to need this baby in a couple of weeks to set tobacco! Been working on it for years and this is the first time that I can't figure it out. My dad bought it new, its a 1952 8N. Thought about trading it in on a new one but my mom wants me to keep it and my dad died a few years ago.

Thanks
