any chance you have a bad ground, have you tried the voltage when trying to start, seen this on a loader that the ground wire was corroded

good luck

how many volts is the Voltmeter reading on the battery (read between the battery + terminal and the frame, do not read from the battery cables) and at the fusebox with the key in the following positions:
1. keyswitch off
2. keyswitch in "on"
3. keyswitch in "Start"

I think your ground cable is not making a good connection. if my guess is correct you will have ~12v at the battery with the key off but it will drop to 8 or 10 (reading from the battery + and the frame) once you turn the key on. however from + to - on the batt will still read ~12v.

ok,just looked down a few posts and theres a post by joeld, where he had problems like mine, somewhat different but close,so i went and put the charger on it 50amp boost, well the dash lights came on but when i went to start it it just went dead and the dash lights wouldnt come back on so i let it sit a minute (on ten amps!!) turned the key dash lights come on again but wouldnt start, didnt even make the starter click,so im going to let it charge and try it again later sounds like it might be the battery even though its only 1 year old today. i hope so ......i will let you know what happens and thanx for your quick replys............chris

Hey There,

Based on my recent experience and help from all here.

First, remove battery terminals from the battery, clean the battery terminals real good, clean the leads real good. Put them back on real tight.

Then try. With luck you'll be good and it was just the connections.

Or, if you have a jump pack, remove leads from battery and hook up jump pack. If she starts then it's the battery.

Finally, as instructed. Hook up your volt meter to the BATTERY terminals, check voltage, then turn on light and check voltage.

If you see no drop. Then do same test on leads rather than terminals, if drop it's your connection to the leads.

Mine is all fixed with new battery and everything cleaned and attached tight.

I installed new battery and had same problems, but I had not tightened the positive lead enough, I tightened and she was good as new.

The light went on in my head when I jumped with jump pack and all was well, was getting 14.96 at leads which said charging system was fine, was either my battery or crappy connection.

Good luck,

Feel free to PM if I can help further.

Boy I have been down this road before...
I know you said you checked the terminals but I would remove each terminal and clean both the posts and the terminals.
Even if they look clean clean them with a wire brush or terminal cleaner same goes for you ground cable on the frame..
When you say you put the charge on it and try to start it and you loose you lights with a click that leads me to beleave you battery terminals need to be cleaned.

well it looks like the battery just decided it had had enough, put one out of my boat in and it started right up,
joeld,i wish i would have read your post before posting this, but thanks for your input and everyone elses,
wallace,i also thought the same thing, the funny thing is once i took the battery out of the tractor and put the boat battery in it, i went back and put the volt meter back on it again and i got 3 volts,i cant figure it out weather the battery has dead cell"(S) or has broken plates,a short or what dosent make any sense??? my hydrometer got broken a while ago so i cant check, but anyway my dilema is solved, the battery is on the charger and if it dosent take a charge ill go get a repacement 3year warranty......thanks again everyone for your input............chris
i will let you know if it takes a charge or not have never had a battery crap out like this before..................................

Same here, first time I had a battery go from fine to dead in a matter of 15 minutes under no draw. I am wondering if maybe it was my connection rather than battery, I don't think I checked the voltage correctly during all the excitement.

This forum is excellent. These guys saved me a whole lot of pain.

Are you guys using replacement lead acid batteries or putting in gel cells, AGM, Optima style batteries?

The Optima style battery does cost a bit more but they are made for the harsh environments which our tractors experience and maybe more importantly they will not leak out corrosive acid (or gas) onto your tractor or cable connections.

I can't help but think that these recent battery failures are due to shaking the snot out the batteries.
