If you have an external vent it will look like either a short pipe with a raised area toward the end, of may have a short piece of tubing attached to it handing straight down in most cases next to the carb.

Now there are several carbs with internal vents and those you don't normally have to worry about. Unless there is a gasket installed incorrectly and blocks off the vent. Would be the gasket between the carb and the air filter mounting elbow.

Hopefully Wednesday evening I'll have time to disassemble it and post a few pictures and you can lead me in the right direction. I have to fix this correctly, because I'm pretty sure the oil gets diluted with fuel too.

So where is the vent tube?

I was talking to a friend, who is a John Deere dealer technician. He was telling me about those particular carbs you have being some what of a problem child when they start acting up. He was saying that they have tried rebuilding them to no avail, so they just replace them when they have issues.

I ordered a carb kit today from the dealer for the cool price of $100. I hope it fixes it up. I'll get it Friday.

When I was restoring an old Honda bike about 6 months ago (bike was froze up for 20 years), I needed to rebuild the carb. OEM rebuild kit was $75. After market: $25. Then I found a full replacement, bolt-on, brand new, Chinese knockoff complete carb for $21 shipped. I like it better than the OEM carb. Better filtration. Smoother throttle. In rebuilding several old Japanese tractors I found a lot of Chinese bolt on parts that were 1/5 the cost of OEM.

Where would I find something like that?

Where would I find something like that?

You start with identifying who makes the carb. I think you said it is a Kawasaki engine? On their motorbikes Kawasaki uses only a few manufacturers for the various models, but they (Kawasaki) do not make carbs themselves as far as I know. Then see if you can find a part number or match it up from a cross reference source like this one:

So where is the vent tube?

The vent on this carb is internal. It is the two larger holes toward the top of the carb on the choke side. They use that same carb on some briggs engines, and when you get a problem child it is like somebody else mentions you just have to replace it.
