This is a typical example of how a person is screwed and doesn't know it.
Probably did not get an estimate, but even if he did, it would be a lie from the hyd tech.
This job probably only took about 30 min, and the rest of the time he either goofed off or was fixing something for another customer.
It is one thing to run a business and make money, but to steal a persons money is just common theft, as I posted in my other post about [ How is this not theft ]
I wonder how many of them would do that crap if they knew a camera was monitoring their work.
What about punching in on the clock and work on my cyl until fixed, and then punch out and then figure the charge based on work time. Would that not be true valve, and I don't even want to hear about hyd fluid, rags, coke break, head break, overhead.
In the military, when a piece of equipment came in to be fixed, it was logged in an assigned to be fixed, the tech would log in the start time, and end time, and if the time looked wrong upon completion, the supervisor would want to know.
If the parts were available, it was fixed immediately. none of this, I will fix it tomorrow crap.
Your expertise and the ability to get the job done was reflected in your evaluations, and that usually meant promotion.
