Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Hello

I haven't mowed now in a couple of months and I went out to whack down the ole' weeds and I'm having a little trouble. MY YM-2000 looks like it has enough juice but when I turn the key to start I just get a little click and nothing else. The click sounds like it is coming from the small cylindrical device that attaches to the top of the starter motor. (Solenoid ???) I've got the battery on charge now just to make sure but what is the likely problem and how do I resolve it?

Many thanks...

Dave

Re: Help... Won\'t Start

Dave,

If that doesn't work read Bird's post on cleaning terminals under this thread:

Dave,
Don't know why that didn't work but try this.

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Hello

All contacts are clean and the battery is nearly at full charge.

Solenoid still makes a loud clunk and the starter motor doesn't try to do anything...

Any thoughts...

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Try pulling the starter and see if it will spin out of the bell housing. I had a starter get stuck, had to clean it out before it would work. Another was just shot and had to be rebuilt. Last idea. Make sure it is in neutral. If the clutch is stuck it wouldn't let the engine turn over in gear with the clutch depressed. The 2000s I have had have had several stuck clutches if left outside for a while.

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Heres what I do and it works half of the time
I take a hammer and I tap the side of the starter
a couple of times, then try to turn it over.

The problem is the solenoid is not engaging
because of dirt,rust, ect...

Try it ! it has worked for me in the field

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

May even try tapping it while it is energized. Have the wife or a kid give a few slight to medium raps, while you are trying to start it.

My ym1700 needed this one time.

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Hi Dave, you need to remove the starter, lay it on yhe ground or workbench, hook a jumper cable, (+), from battery or charger to the battery terminal on the starter and touch the
(-) cable to the metal case. The starter should run. If it does you need to backtrack to the battery. If not, you need to fix the starter. It's just a 12v electric motor, with some reduction gears. Fixin' is 90% detective work and 10% fixin'.....One other thing, make sure the engine will still turn over and has not frozen up.

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Hello

Thanks for all your help...

After trying all your suggestions, the last thing I did was to hook it directly to a good car battery. Nothing is turning so I'm assuming its the starter. I've going to have the starter rebuilt and a new solenoid placed on it.

Thanks again...

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

Hi Dave,
One other thing you might want to check before you take the starter somewhere is whether the brushes in the starter are worn to a point that they are no longer making contact on the comutator. My Yannie had the same symtoms as you discribe. I did the tapping with a hammer trick, and it worked for a while. When it stopped working I figured it was time for a new solinoid. After installing that, it still didn't work. After some head scratching I discovered the brushes were worn way down. Apparently the tapping was enough to get them to make contact. After new brushes no more problem. Jim

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

I had one that did that and the starter was full of mud. Local starter shop cleaned it for $40.00. Still works great 6 mos later.

Re: Help... Won\'t Start (New Info)

If it isn't the cable connections from the battery to the starter, then my moneys says it is the contact bar in the solenoid. But your best move is to take it off and let the local starter shop clean it up. If the solenoid needs service it is probably brush time too. The starters rarely need bushes or bearings. Starter rebuilds are inexpensive and then it will be good for decades.

"I had one that did that and the starter was full of mud." Yes, mine was packed full of grass and grit. I've never understood how that much stuff could have gotten in there. Jim

The starter is on its way to the shop as we speak. The last think I did was to bypass the solenoid and hook power direct to the starter motor. (Off Tractor) I put negative to the case and positive to the the copper braided wire coming from the motor. El-zippo. Not even a gasp.

Thanks again all for your wonderful suggestions. After the rebuild / solenoid replacement I should be good for another 25 years... ;-)

<font color=black>Very thoughtfull of you to have it fixed correctly, rather than patching it. The next owner will greatly appreciate that!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
These tractor remind me of the old ford 9/2/8N tractors... they live long enough to have multiple 'partners'.
