Help with rotary mower gear box

Have a 6' rotary mower. Dont know the brand. Tag doesnt show nothing even after scraping off the paint.

I took the old gear box off years ago because the gears were messed up. And i misplaced it.

Im wondering what gear box I need that can fix this thing.

Currently we are using a rotary mower that has rusted through the metal...its going to get one of us killed if I dont fix this other mower.

I would take it apart and see whats wrong . if the input and output shafts are fine the gears and seals are cheap compared to a new box , IIRC a generic box will be a couple hundred bucks


Dang , my reading comprehension is rough today . Just buy a new box the bolt pattern should be the same and few calculations will determine if the output shaft is the right length for the stump jumper.

Ive looked on agri supply..they dont have this set up with side mounted bolt holes.

remove that and bolt directly to the deck , If the deck is not strong enough add some plate. Its an old mower and i doubt you can find an exact replacement without a model number

Why not just add a flat plate to the top of the mower housing with the necessary holes, and use this type gear box?

Send the pictures to flail master of all the parts and the measurements for the bolt pattern for the gearbox mount in an email so they know what gearbox you will need.

BUT in saying that:
I really think your rotary cutter is really a home made rotary cutter. I have never seen a one to one gear right angle box set up like this over 47 plus years. Every one I have seen has the gearbox bolted directly to the top plate weldment.


It might just be simpler to scrap it and buy a four footer with the new drive shaft with the plastic shaft guards and the gear box guard and the discharge baffle plates/rubber discharge flaps or a good flail mower like a Caroni. Agrisupply is probably already selling the Caroni flail mowers at a discount through their internet sales promotions.

Well, it may be cheaper to get flat metal plate and cut the angle iron off and mount a new gear now.

I may just do that.

Have a woods M5 dixie cutter. Gear box leaks. Going to mount new gear box and 12 spline stump jumper from agri supply, woods replacement gear box is $1000+ w/ shipping on top. The woods is side bolt to gear box, modifying the agri supply gear box does NOT look difficult.

Could try to replace seals in woods gear box but not worth the hassle.

Working on a cutter can be challenging. Lots of heavy parts and bolts that can be difficult. It is not complicated but you will get a chance to use a good long cheater pipe or a torch.
