I need help trying to find out what all requirements Michigan has for a truck to need dot numbers. Got told from a buddy that hauls rvs commercially that I wouldn't need any dot because it would be private interprise but can't find anything when I Google for requirements so I figured I'd throw it out on here and ask you guys what usually is required and I'd I would even need dot

We will be having a f550 with plow on it. Uses will be some for business hauling equipment for Comercial kitchens, plowing a few parking lots maybe but most likely a private alley 1/4 mile down the road and farm use. And maybe haul a few cars from Texas up here

If you cross state lines for business purposes and your combined GVWR is over 10k you must have DOT number, log book, medical card, UCR, commercial inspection on truck and trailer, reflective triangles and fire extinguisher. This is a federal law. Buying cars in Texas to sell in Michigan and hauling them there is a business purpose. State laws can vary but in Texas if you don't leave the state you don't need a DOT number until you exceed 26k. Once you cross state lines federal rules kick in.

There is a big difference between private enterprise and personal use. For personal use, you need nothing beyond a drivers license. For private enterprise, it is commercial and all DOT rules will apply. Over 10K requires DOT number, medical card, etc. Over 26K combined and you need a CDL. A lot of misinformation out there so I would only trust the government sources. If in doubt, check with the local state police. They are the ones that will give the ticket.
