I have a 1955 Ford 640. When you start it after it has been setting overnight, the lift will not work at first. You have to lower lift lever all the way and then raise a couple of times and then it will work the rest of the day. Does anyone know what would be causing this? Haven't had the tractor but about 2 weeks so haven't had time to really dig into it to find problem.

1st, check the oil in the hyd sump... see if it is milky ( water )
2, check the oil after using it a bit... is it foamy? ( oil and maybee water )
3, if you remove ( loosen actually ) the inverted plug in the head o f the pump at startup till oil trickles out, then tighten plug, will the lift work immediately?
