It's funny how on the east coast no one wants to use barbed wire for horses, and in the west, that's about all you see.
I just got back from a week of riding in colorado, all the horse pastures are barbed wire, at least what I saw.

Totally understand. It takes a personal experience with a horse and wire to make an opinion.

I don't know about the east/west differences. I wonder what factors come into play?
Confined spaces in east vs. open range
Cost of fence
Cost of breed
Age of fence line?

Could be an interesting analysis, one I would be interested in.

Rip.. I think you hit it.

East.. smaller farms... you stick 20 horses on 20ac and you have lots of horse to wire contact. ( small acerages you can fence with more 'appropriate wire/board and not go broke.. )

West.. lots of land.. might have 100-200 animals on hundreds of ac.. less animal to fence contact.. and it's just not feasable to fence in a 'section' with board and no climb wire fence...
