Help with buying a horse

Just wondering. Do you guys ride 4 wheelers or your horses to check your fence lines. I can see advantages to both but on a horse you may have to go back on a 4 wheeler with tools etc you just couldn't carry on your horse. Again, I was just wondering, El.

Actually, I always keep an eye on my fence while riding my horse in the pasture. If I ever see a place that needs repairs, I usually go back on my golf cart loaded with equipment.

I generally use my BX to fix fence. carry tools and stuff inthe bucket and use Backhoe to stretch the fence.

First of all, Soundguy, the wife says you are a dear man for recommending a rescued horse. There are lots of very good horses that just became to much of a burden for people.

elalexander, I don't know how far you are from this organization but the wife says they are one of the most responsible/reputable horse rescues she has had the pleasure to work with. You could certainly learn a lot from volunteering at a place like this, as well as teach the grandkids how much work is needed to own a horse.

Most of the time they are too helpful in repairing fences with you; if you don't watch your tools they'll likely take one and drop it where you can't find it for awhile

HA! Sounds like my 3 year old "helping daddy." I can totally see a horse doing that. Around here most folks seem to drive those suped-up golf carts, but the average age of a farmer in this neck of the woods has got to be >60. I went to the stock yards the other day with my papaw and really stood out. The only other people even close to my age, there were 2 of them, were sitting in the back on the phones with their bosses out west. Buyers for the feedlots. Youngsters just aren't farming that much, but those that do use the ATV's. I don't have either yet, so it's usually my trusty F150, but I really need to remedy that.

When I ride the fence to look for faults.. it's on my tractor, with an extra board dragging the ground, and a bucket of nails and a hammer and a stretcher tool inthe fel bucket.. etc.. shovel.. PHD, maybee an extra post if i think one is down... etc..

Yep.. sometimes peopl eget in a position where they can't care for them.. that's life.. and it's good if they can find a shelter or sell them or give them to owners that can care for them. However.. when people hold onto the animals and allow them to suffer.. or worse yet.. abuse them.. it makes me wonder what's going thru their mind.

Oru mule for instance.. we just got him from a rescue.. he's a shy animal, and apaprently was pretty badly abused. The shelter took in so many animals last year that they had to adopt them out as they lost their pasture... They had all horses, and this one mule.. so he kept getting passed over.. we went in to look at him.. and he 'chose' us.. He's put together a bit funny.. but he can't help his breeding.. The wife and I love his ears and markings... he's got zebra stripes on his legs.. and the 'cross' pattern on his back.. 'Zach" is his name..

Our property has various terrain and some of the fence are on steep slopes and hard to get to. Here is a pic of my "Fence Patrol"......

Hi Cotton, I need one of those, but it's on the can't afford it list. Been using a five year old lawntractor. It doesn't like hills or rough ground. Maybe next year we can upgrade
