Have removed the nuts/bolts from the axle. What is the secret to pulling off the (flat) tires? They won't budge.

Hello and welcome to TBN.

On a JD724 walk behind thrower the wheel may have become rusted to the axle....OR the holes that the nut and bolt (or pin on some) went thru may have gotten mishaped on the ends and stick up higher than the axle and larger than the wheel hub.

This happens very often.

You may need to file the hole (or the axel near the hole) a bit to get the axle back in shape

if they are rusted on...a good penetrating oil should loosen them up....wd-40 or PB Blaster

Also....if your tire is low....most of the time all you need to do is air it up. If it is completely flat....raise it off the ground and air it up....you may need to squeeze the tire against the rim if it came off the rim

If you removed the bolts and the rim is stuck to the axle you can use penetrant as mentioned and tap the back of the rim with a dead blow hammer. Before remounting apply a little never sieze where the metals meet each other.
To break the tire bead I lay them on the garage floor, place a 2x6 or similar on the edge of the rim and drive my tractor up the board.
Breaks the bead every time.

I sprayed with WD40. Nothing immediate happened. Sprayed some more. Will tackle again tomorrow after work. Thanks!!!

i was at the tire shop today putting new tires on my 1/2 ton.I noticed they were taking tires off a john deer tractor. One was giving them a hard time .they put some lub on the studs and wacked the tire with a 8lbs mall.I asked them if they ever damaged the wheel hitting with that mall.they said never .thats the way they always take the rims off when they won't come off
