I have 5 cleared acres and need a tractor to plow snow, mow grass and maybe a future back hoe. Does anyone know what size Deere to purchase? The model numbers are so confusing. I was thinking of using a rear mower set up. Thank you

Are you thinking of lawn-type mowing, that you would do with a RFM (rear finish mower), or less frequent Bush Hog type mowing?

With respect to the backhoe, bigger is better (but more expensive). I bought a used JD 4600 with a 48 backhoe and a 460 loader. That outfit was a size class larger than I was originally contemplating. I could afford to go bigger, because I bought it used, at about half the price of new. For my use, especially the backhoe, I am very glad I went larger. That said, my tractor is a bit large for lawn mowing.

Others may have contrary (and equally valid) opinions, but I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than the John Deere 3000 series. If backhoe work is a major part of your plan, I would go with the 4000 series.

While I like John Deere, I would suggest evaluating the other brands as well. The availability of a good nearby dealer may be as important a consideration as which brand you go with.

Good luck in your search!

You didn't mention the nature, dimensions of the future projects you have in mind for your new tractor. Depending upon how extensive those projects might be - that can be a big factor in determining what size - model of tractor would best fit your needs.

That said, if you're just finish mowing 5 acres of lawn and plowing a couple hundred feet of driveway and parking area, digging a few small stumps or clearing an acre or so of brush - you could easily do those chores with a 2520 or 2720 and 200cx loader, 270 backhoe and 6' rear finish mower.

Not really necessary to jump up to a 3000 series and certainly not all the way up to the 4000 machines!

But... if you're like some of us here on TBN - myself included - more capacity and more horsepower is ALWAYS the better solution!! Far be it; for me to sell you on a smaller chassis machine - if you really want to buy something bigger! :D

Nonetheless, the 2000 series tractors have plenty of grunt to accomplish the kinds of work you've currently outlined.

What you choose to do with it makes a big difference in what size tractor you need. I prefer larger equipment to get a place in shape primarily, but when this work is completed a much smaller machine may be more practical. If most of what you are doing is mowing and clearing the driveway a smaller tractor such as AKfish suggested will do the job while having the use of a small fel and backhoe.

Since your property is cleared already the next question I would have is how smooth is it and do you need to do any grading and lawn work of consequence? If so you may find it far less costly and get better results to contract this out and buy the smaller equipment for what is left to do on a regular basis. Something like the 2520 or 2720 would be my preference too.

Hey Rrrispo
Don't really understand what you are showing here.
Looked on Google Earth and what you have pinned is what looks to be a large apartment complex with very small patches of grass here and there.

I do agree though that a larger 2000 series CUT will do you just fine.
