Been asked to help with this

We have a problem with the tractor that needs urgent attention - at present it has had to be abandoned in the middle of a field. *Apparently, the button on the starter solenoid, which we press to spin the gears when it won't engage on the first try to start the engine, has stuck in. *So the starter motor won't stop working.

Any ideas?

Hammer, BIGGER HAMMER or pull battery lead, then starter and rebuild...............

Mark your leads. On the starter and remove the starter. You can spin the starter with jumper cables with the starter off the tractor. Id the solenoid is sticking it will not release the starter gear from the flywheel. It could just need removing the solenoid and cleaning it if rusted and reassemble. Or the solenoid is bad and needs replaced. -kid

Not a complicated task so I would tear it down to look at it, not a complicated task but I'm fortunate in that I have a nice old guy who lives a few doors down who still rebuilds starters / alternators and generators for a living, cost isn't much more than what it would cost us in parts and it keeps him in business.
