First this is on a Volvo excavator, EC454. It is my impression they are a general design so the exact machine may not matter. It has a Mitsubishi engine if it matters.

Had issue with fuel solenoid not working. Found out power was not reaching it. Begin running new wire and it worked great. Ran the engine for about 5 minutes and it shut down. The fuel shut off solenoid was very hot and had burnt up with blowing the fuse. Order a new solenoid and replace it and it worked fine for about 20 minutes as I ran the machine doing some brush clearing. Same thing again, the new solenoid was way hot, and it burnt out.
The mechanic is not certain the issue and I fully believe in the necessary wires replacement he got a wiring mistake. It will crank, run and cut off the way it is wire as it is supposed to. If the wires were crossed seems it would not perform the functions properly as it did. Is it possible there is power going to one part of the solenoid that should not be powered once it cranks? Can anyone tell me (has three wires) anything about what each wire should have power on it as it cranks opening the fuel valve and then when running? Does it keep power on one of the wires to keep it running? The amp draw on the replacement was to me very reasonable. Think it was just over 4 amps when it was cranking and running.

Any help would be appreciated. Have a second new solenoid but really don't want to burn it up.

Thank you,

Ken

With a three wire fuel solenoid usually one is a ground, one is a pull in winding and one is a hold winding.
The pull in winding is often wired to the starter and is only active while cranking, once the starter is released and the key returns to run then the run winding will take over and hold the solenoid open, some of these will use relays a few don't.
One winding when ohmed to ground will have much more resistance to ground (low current=less heat) that will be the run winding, the coil with less resistance (more current= more heat) will be the pull in winding

Black is ground.
Red is (run) hold.. low amps
White is pull in.. hi amps

The pull in portion of the wiring is not cutting out and leaving the hold circuits in use.

On some JD’s there is a thermistor controlling this function. A ten dollar item.

Here's a link to a previous post that has ohm and voltage values for a particular JD app.

Deer uses a logic board to intergrate all the safety switch status and enable/deny voltage for the pull in solenoid. To bypass, use a momentary contract switch which allow the pull in circuit to be momentarily (10 sec is what Deere calls out) energized.

U said u ran new wire..
Just swap the wires..
You’ve got 12v battery voltage plus, going to the pull in coil.
I’ve never done it before.. but u could run a wire from the pull in coil to the starter exciter wire.. you’ll get the full amps to pull it in..& it’ll quit when u release the key..
Not sure if u can run battery voltage to the hold coil.??
I’ve only tested the solenoid when they came in, on the pump..
Good luck

I just learned something here
