Hopefully the bendex. Do you know if there is a shear pin on this thing, to prevent chewing up flywheel gear. Don't think it made enough noise to be eating up gear. Now it sounds like gear rotating on shaft. Possibly broken shaft? Have call in to dealer. Will post outcome.

Before you remove the starter, give it a couple tap with a hammer or mallet. Sometimes those Bendix will stick.

If the tapping doesn't work, let the Dealer do it, since it's in warranty...or at least let him know. He may just give you a replacement starter.

Andy,
No tractor not under warranty. Expired 13 day ago! I have been in contact with the dealer and it sounds hopeful! Will post results soon.
Thanks.

Roy,
Thanks for the reply. I tried the hammer trick, even went and got a BIG hammer, but no change.
As Jinman so aptly put it, and Rickb, conferred, I am afraid that it is a case of “infant mortality”. Took the plunge and ordered new starter.
The good news is that I now know how to move the tractor, and remove the starter with loader, and loader bracket still on. Haven’t got to the part about putting the thing back on yet, but I will let you know how that goes. Thanks for the help.

When you say it sounds hopeful, I hope you mean the dealer will provide it under warranty. Last time I had to deal with a tractor starter, it was about a third to half of the price of a new one to get it rebuilt.

13 days out of warranty???? Man I would think someone might cut you some slack and at least be kind enough to furnish warranty parts. Can't imagine any dealer not being able to fudge a couple of days on the parts warranty for a good customer like you.

PineRidge,
Yep, 13days. Have not heard back from dealer yet, but I have faith in him.
Good news is that I have replaced the starter, and all is fine. I was lucky! I did not have to remove any other parts to drop starter. I would not have guessed this, from first looking at location of starter, (behind loader bracket) but with $100 worth of new tools I was able to just drop starter and work it out without removing anything else. New one went back in with no problems other than being a contortionist to reach the bolts to get them started.
I understand that there are repair manuals for this tractor, and have been to the NH website to look for these, but the numbers are mostly greek to me. Anyone know which one I should be searching for. Or how to decode the publication numbers to tell what each manual is for?

Thanks to all for their help.
John

So... can you tell us what you found on the old starter? Was the problem obvious once it was removed?

I'm confident that your dealer will make it right for you. Although not nearly as expensive we lost an ignition switch just over the warranty period and our dealer furnished the part, and we furnished the labor. Good luck to you.

I'm also curious if you could see and visible problem with the starter after you removed it. Did you try to spin it up after it was removed to see what the bendix did?

Jinman, PineRidge,
Dealer has been good so far, so am curious to see how he handles this. Will keep you posted.
As far as the old starter, I still can’t say for sure, what the problem was. I did bench test and found that the solenoid shifts the drive gear out to engage. Seems to turn correctly, but with no load against the gear I can’t say for sure that the gear doesn’t just spin. Can not turn gear on shaft by hand, so doesn’t seem to be loose gear. I will not take the thing completely apart myself, but plan to have rebuilt by starter shop and then keep for spare. Once this is done, I will post results and price to have rebuilt.
Thanks for your help.

PineRidge, What part of OH.?

Most likely if your dealer does give you credit he'll want the old starter back so he can get credit himself.

Clinton, Ohio is very close to the Football Hall Of Fame although we are out in the sticks some. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
