I was unsure whether to put this here or in owning/operating. I put it here because I will be purching a tractor based on the information I receive you this great team of knowledge on this site :)

I googled live vs independent pto and somewhat understanding live pto ( I'm more of a visual learner lol) so I can really use some help to understand live pto from the guys that use it on the machine I'm looking to purchase (ck35hst). Please explain how I would use the pto while mowing with a hydrostatic transmission...... stopping/going ect. I'm used to a small riding lawn mower that you just flip a switch to have the pto come on. I just sold my Kubota L3540 HST and that had a independent pto but I never used it once.

To be honest from reading on live pto I'm kinda nervous on purchasing the ck35hst so that's why I'm asking ppl who one them.

Live PTO is nothing to worry about, I have one, no issues. It can be confusing, so I'll do my best to explain.

There are 3 types of PTO, transmission, live, and independent.

Transmission PTO is what I have on the H. The PTO takes power directly from the transmission gearing. A Clutch is required to engage and disengage. It can be dangerous as it is directly connected to the tranny, so the implement can actually push the tractor along. No modern tractor has one that I know of.

Live, or live independent PTOs are a little different. The power for the PTO is completely separate from the transmission gears. It has a clutch that allows power from the engine to be transferred to the PTO. This clutch is the same as the tractor clutch, and in fact on an HST machine is the main use for the clutch. As the system is completely separate from the tranny, there is no danger in the PTO pushing the tractor.

The independent PTO works the same as the live PTO, but the clutch is hydraulic and automatic. When you flip that switch, it automatically engaged the clutch, turns the PTO on, and then disengages the clutch.

This is my laymans understanding of PTO types, it may not be exactly correct.

Now, to PTO operation. With any PTO the tractor rpms should be idled before engaging the PTO. Therefore the CK live PTO, you would come to the work area, stop the tractor, idle the rpms, push the clutch in, engage the PTO lever, slowly let off the clutch, then slowly bring the RPMs up to operating speed. You would have to do this even with an independent PTO, so there is no real benefit there. With a HST, you can then infinitely vary the speed without changing ranges or touching the clutch. A crash stop can be made by hitting the clutch, which stops tractor movement and the PTO. Just make sure you turn off the cruise control, power down the rpms, and disengage the PTO before you let off the clutch. When you disengage the PTO, dropping the rpms is not strictly necessary, but still a good idea. So you would stop, drop the rpms, engage the clutch, turn off the PTO, disengage the clutch, and off you go. DO NOT ever engage the PTO at high rpms, you will put a HUGE amount of stress on the PTO and implement, and there are stories of people jamming the implement from a quick start. This may sound complicated but it really isn't, and most of these procedures would have to be used with a independent PTO as well.

I have the CK35HST and have used the PTO like this for a while now, and have no issues with it. I really don't think an independent PTO would speed me up at all, except the infamous clutch/brake/HST pedal screwup.

Hope this helps.

My brother has a CK synch-shuttle with live PTO and while he prefers the independent PTO on our other tractors, Case, Kubota, MF etc., he is very happy with the Kioti overall.

I'd love to have an independent PTO, but have used a live PTO for 32 years. It's like electric door locks vs manual.

Ok this is what really helps to understand. Out of all the reading I'v done I haven't come a cross anyone mentioning this. Every talks about geared transmissions.
Thanks for helping me understand :)

Not mentioned is that on the gear tractors with live PTO, the clutch is 2 stage. Half way down disengages PTO; all the way down disengages tranny and PTO. I like the live PTO for post hole digging where you can modulate the PTO on/off with the clutch. I wouldn't want to do that with electric over hydraulic.
