I have this small gear pump, but can't find any specs on it. It has a 5/8 9 spline shaft - SAE A 2 bolt mounting and a larger in port (3/4?) than out (1/2?)
I would like to know the displacement / rev and (ultimately) GPM at 1800rpm.
Also does anyone have any cross reference info for a direct replacement based on the numbers? If they relate to the pumps design, I haven't been able to decipher them...but I'm not all that hydraulically savvy...

Thanks for any help!

John S. Barnes was purchased by Haldex corporation several years ago and became Haldex Barnes. Then about 3 - 4 years ago it was sold off to Concentric. Possibly try doing a search for Concentric distributors in your area.

I had an old John S barnes pump that I had no idea what was and didnt need. Wanted to sell on ebay but knew nothing about it.

IIRC, I made some phone calls to haldex barnes and after some phone-jockying I was able to speak with someone that looked it up and gave me the specs.

well...I've spent emails and phone calls with Concentric, all they can come up with was that it was an OEM pump - no idea as to it's specs. I had heard that it had come off a 1 lung diesel kubota around 5Kw so it couldn't have been much. Apparently it was used on tank transport trailers to move the ramps up and down. Since you need a special socket to disassemble, I can't measure the gears. I was just trying to get an idea of what the engine would handle based on what was designed for it.

Concentric told me that the Kubota engine could spin a 22 gpm / 7 gpm log splitter pump; but I'm a little dubious. The Kubota EA series is about 4.5Kw/16.5 Nm Torque at 2400 rpm. It will 5.15 KW Max at 3000 rpm, but I don't want to drive it that hard (too loud!) I just can't see driving that much pump, and the expansion tank requirements would be bigger than my 4"x1.5"x24" splitter ram. I'm trying to do this on a shoestring budget to help out a friend who is out of work; trying to use what I can scrounge - buy what I have to...

So what is the end game here?

You have a kubota EA enging that makes 5.15 KW, and an unknown pump that it was driving and you are wanting to build a splitter? And wondering if the pump you have on hand is a viable option?

5.15kw is about 6.90HP. And there is no way it would run that 22/7 7-stage pump. Those need ~14-15 HP to run. Your better off sticking with an 11GPM 2-stage pump.

As to the pump you have, If it was run off that 6.9HP engine, the best that 6.9HP can do at 3000psi is only 3.35 GPM. So I'd say the pump is somewhere around there, and being single stage, with a small HP engine, it wont really make a good log splitter anyway. It will be extremely slow. Especially if you want to back it down to 2400rpm.

3 GPM with a 4x24 cylinder and a 1.5" rod is gonna give a cycle time of 48.5 seconds  And with the specs on your motor, thats about all your gonna get a single stage to do.

Thank you very much for the info and advice. I wanted to find a 2 stage pump, but when the 22/7 was recommended I didn't think it was going to work. That's why finding out what the engine originally drove was important, so I could find a pump that had close to the original gpm/pressure for it's high side; the low pressure rates shouldn't be as critical. I know it won't be as fast as some log splitters I've seen built out there, but it should work acceptably with pump that rated for a 6-8 hp gas engine - now to find a hydraulic tank.....
