Tractor
Ford 8000, 5600, 5000, 801
Hey everyone, this is my first post here, but I have been lurking in the shadows for some time now. I just wanted to comment on how helpful everyone is and hopefully yall can help me out too.

The tractor in question was my grandfathers which he purchased from the county some time ago.

Tractor Number: C654892
Model: LA254C
Unit: 0L4B
Engine: 0J15A

Hopefully this is enough information to determine the model.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy, are you certain this is a New Holland or Ford? For some reason, that model number sounds more like a Kubota.

Welcome to TBN. Is a photo possible?

It's definitely a Ford, pretty blue and has ford stamp all over it.;) If I had to guess it's a late 70s early 80s model.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures and it'll be another week before I would be able to get one. From pictures I have seen of similar tractors it's a x600 model. It looks just like a Ford 5600 or 6600.

Thanks,
Jeremy

It would be a 5600 built in November of 1980.

Unit: 0L4B

november 4th, 1980, B ( day shift ) to be exact.

On another note..

optimist.. where did you get your chart.. mine id's the L as 5600 or 5610.. I don't have a clue as to the 'A' as engine identifier.. my chart only lists d (diesel) g (gas) p (lp ).. or 1 /5 for diesel late model, and 2/6 for gas, late model... I also don't have a list for the trailing letter engine production code. got a link to your list?

thanks

I wish that I still had a chart. I'm just going from memory, which can be hazardous at times. The LA 5600 came into being after the "6600" hp increases lead to a gap between it and the 4600. Some wizard came up with the idea of bringing back the lower displacement block in a new model to fill the gap. Sort of. Kind of screwed up the code sequence as well.

Cheers, Opti

Ahh.. so the A code was likely tied to the old 233 cid then?

Not really, engine displacement didn't factor directly into model designation. The other similar configurations were designated the same, e.g. BA2, CA2 DA2, LA2, EA2, FA2. The "L" was just next in the que, following whatever "K" was used for, an Industrial model I think.

The first character was supposed to indicate HP, that kind of fell apart with the "LA" 5600. This happened after the Chassis Type became alpha characters and the 3rd character designated the design level, which in this case was "2" for 7A-II. FWIW the Model 420 was a KD2.
