Help - Farm Rated Hydraulic fluid added instead of Hy Trans Fluid

So I have a Case 75c. My brother over the weekend noticed that the hydraulic fluid was low and proceeded to drive to fleet farm and buy the Farm Rated Case IH Trans-Hydraulic fluid to top it off instead of waiting till the dealership opened on Monday and get the Hy Tran stuff.


I figure he put in about 2 gallons to top it off. According to the manual, it shows the capacity of 10.3 gallons. What do you guys suggest other than slap him? Do a full change out now or just run it with 20% of of the non Hy Tran Fluid in there.

Clarify please, but it sounds like your tractor has a separate fluids for transmission and hydraulics?

If I got it right, you are saying he poured Trans-Hydraulic oil in and mixed it with Hydraulic only oil?

My old Ford has the same oil for both and this type would be OK.

No. Mine are combined for tranny and hydraulics.

they have made several different ones over the years.
The latest and greatest is;
HY-TRAN® ULTRACTION™HYDRAULIC TRANSMISSION OIL MAT3540

Then you have ;
Hy-Tran plus from a few years ago

Personally I would be leery of the generic oils,
that said our IH dealer carries a Shell Hy-Tran which is what we normally use on the farm.

My choice is Cen-Pe-Co multi purpose fluid.

The Ultra Hy-Tran specs out much like a synthetic fluid of 10W-40.

On the jug of no name does it list any specs that it supposedly meets or exceeds;
such as HyTran Plus or JD D or C.

Either way 2 gallons wouldn't bother me a lot,
how long till your filter and fluid change?
With it holding 10 gallons the Genuine fluid is about $88 for a 5 gallon pail,
the others run $45 to $70 I would tend to go with the brand name or a high quality which will cost as much or more.

No farm rated stuff doesn't list any specs or anything on the bucket. The fluid has probably another year left of life.

Well it says that it meets current IH specs.
I wouldn't be pleased with that in my tractor.
I do change the filter and fluid a bit more often then required.
I don't know how often you need to top off from implement leaks and such,
if it bothers you change the filter and fluid early or just get better oil for any future top ups.

I think I will just change it out then sack punch him. Repairs are too expensive to risk it.

Ask an oil-analysis laboratory. If they are capable of answering your question they will probably ask for a sample before offering an opion. Basic analysis is around $30, and there may be additional tests recommended, all costs you can ask your brother to pay.
