I did not notice the gauge. Saw a little smoke and the temp needle was in the red. I shut the motor off...what else should I do? The reservoir cap was open and it looks like most of the coolant is gone. Should I put some in and run the motor or should I let it cool down first?

If belt is broke just let it cool while you get a new on. Running w broken belt would not circulate...bad with fluid added to a hot engine. dont worry, the engine is ok.

I would replace the engine.

On second thought, replace the belt, fill with water/antifreeze, run it for another 20 years. Try that then post back... :D :D ;)

Had the same thing happen to me with my BX-23. Didn't notice the temp gauge but the smoke finally got my attention. I just shut her down and cooled off then eased her back to the garage later. Put a new fan belt on the next day and refilled the antifreeze. That was last fall with no issues since. You'll be fine.
