HELP - 2320 - Can hydraulics get into the engine oil?

Can the hydraulic oil get into the engine oil on a 2320?


I went to check the engine oil on my 2320 this morning and found that it was slighty overfilled (about a 1/4" over full on the dipstick). I changed the oil about 25 hrs ago, but dont remember it being overfilled at that time..

Over the past couple years I have had a slight hydraulic oil leak under the seat/rear axle - hydraulic oil was oozing from a bolt in the rear end. It was only leaking after it got hot and then would drip slightly.. I keep an eye on it and then just add a cup or 2 of hydraulic fluid as needed.




Thoughts.. suggestions??

I don't think so as the Hydro unit is in the rear and the engine is in the front with the only connection being a driveshaft.

Is there any frothyness to the oil? Any milky color? The reason I ask is that it is possible the you have coolant in your oil? Is your coolant level low?

How often do you check your oil? The other answer is that you slightly overfilled when you did your oil change as it takes a while for all of the oil to drain down. If you checked the dipstick after your oil change ans it was full, you might have more drain down through the block as it sits.

Agree with what Mac Tractor says. The only other thing that could contaminate your oil would be the fuel through your fuel pump if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks guys.. I went ahead and did an early oil change and say no contamination - nothing cloudy, nothing frothy, nothing milky - I am letting it settle in a container to see if anything floats to the top just to check..

The coolant level was at the 'low mark' so I topped it off to full. based on looking at the maintenance records I dont show any note of ever adding any in the past 6.5 yrs though..

I could have easily added too much oil to the engine.. per the book, it takes 3 qts 12oz - I just take 20oz out of a gallon container and dump it in. I will start adding less than that then add more slowly to it gets to full

go to auto zone and see if you can borrow a radiator pressurizer and do a leak down test

Lowered the oil do the 'full' mark on the stick yesterday and then rough cut for about 3 hrs.. Oil level still the same on the stick

anti-freeze level actually came up when i started the tractor so i marked it with a pen on the container by 'date' - I will keep an eye on it as well

The used that was drained sit in a container over night and still no sign of any contamination.. IF i was leaking diesel into the oil, how can you tell? Smell or sight?

Hiya,

If you still have the drain oil, take a sample and have it analyzed. That is the only sure way to determine if your have fuel dilution or coolant contamination. I think you overfilled it and didn't notice it initially.

Since the hydraulic pump is bolted to the engine and driven directly, there is a possibility of cross-contamination I think if the seal fails in the pump. JDP unfortunately does not show a good breakdown of the pump to see the seal.

I agree 100% with getting the oils tested, then you will know for sure.

On the 2320 the pump is not directly connected to the motor but rather with infamous driveshaft.
I'm with the previous poster, I believe you just slightly over filled. happens! You'll be fine....good luck!

UPDATE 9-9 Checked the engine oil again today after letting it sit since Saturday and its over full again - by about 1/4" (which is ~6oz or so i think)..

I am guessing its diesel fuel - where would that come from? is that a DIY job or need to go to the dealer?

I am going to order a Blackstone Labs test kit to send a sample it..

Any thoughts?
