Hello all, I just noticed recently that my 4x4 in my truck isn't working in 4hi, but 4 low works perfectly. It is a 2007.5 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel.

It has the dash mounted switch, I turn it to engage 4hi and I get the dash indicator and I feel a clunk and it feels like it engages, but the front doesn't pull. I switch it to 4lo and I feel and hear it engage and it does pull and works great. I am not really sure why one would work and the other wouldn't especially when I can feel it and hear it trying to engage and even get my dash indication. Can anyone help with this? I am not a member on any off the diesel forums but will join if it can help with this. My warranty is expired so that isn't an option. Hopefully it is just a little issue. Thanks.

Oh, and I need 4wd tomorrow, so if I can't get it knocked out in the morning or tonight I guess I will scream around in 4lo.

My experience with a Dodge 4x4 unit was my neighbors. It was much older, a 1996 with a 360, but it broke the shift fork in the transfer case. It would not engage 4 high or 2 wheel drive but 4 low worked. I would start at the transfer case.

By the way I fixed it. Local Dodge dealer got the parts in a couple of days. We dropped the drive shafts, then the transfer case. Once I opened it up it was easy to see what was wrong. It was not a dash switched unit but the old floor mounted lever actuated unit.

Good luck.

Chris

Yeah I'm with Chris. If the 4wd hi does not work but low does, that points to Xfer case. Frankly I don't know more about what ChryCo uses for Xfer cases or their inner workings so that's the best I can offer.

They say this happens when it dont get used much, I try to use mind when I am at my property just to check it out, anyway try engaging it in 4H just going real slow, just DONT do this in 4L, 4L has to be a complete stop, they say I can engage mind in 4H as long I am going under 35 or 45 mph, I read it a few times, then I did it going slow and tryed it more times going a little faster, I got up to 30 mph and it still shifted good. I was a little worried at first, Hope it works out for you. Lets us know.

Thanks for the replies guys. I sure as **** hope it isn't the xfer case. I will try to go into hi moving and see what it does.

On your 4H and 4L switch, there is a small light, it will blink until it is fully engage then when fully engaged the light will stay on, keep an eye on that also. And since Dodge uses a solid front axle, when using the steering wheel it is a little hard to turn sharp, it will let you know. Good luck.

What does the dash light do when you turn the switch to 4H?

I had a friends truck with the same problem where only 4H wouldn't kick in, the light didn't turn on in 4H either. It turned out to be the switch itself and was a pretty easy fix. I'm glad I still have the nice big shifter on the floor of my 03 RAM.

I do get the 4x4 indication light on the dash. I also hear it click and feel it lightly thunk like it always does when shifting into 4hi. But the front doesn't pull. I test it on a huge sand bank by the house. 4lo pulls good, 4hi doesn't even try.

I also tried it at speed, that didn't help either. I will post it over on Cumminsforum. Thanks everyone.

try driving backwards, then forewards and then shift to N and then try to engage it.

had to do that once onmy yukon that has the shifter button on the dash.. hadn't used 4wd in a while and it got sticky.

I like my dodge 1500 with shifter on the floor.. no doubts about when / if it shifts :)
