It's not the amount of breaths you take , 'cause we all have a 100% certainty of dieing, period!:2cents:

There are two certainties in life: One is that you'll die one day, and the other is that you have to pay tax !!

Thats a local saying where i live.. i found it interesting because this is where both sides of the coin meet: We're all going to die one day, wearing a helmet or not. And when we get into accidents, the tax payer has to cough up the nursing cost...

Many see the very act of riding a motorcycle as unnecessarily dangerous and refer to them as "murdercycles" as per Joan Claybrooke.

ER people call them "donorcycles"!!! You can figure that out!!

We also call helmets, "brain buckets" for the obvious reason they help with the clean up.

We just lost 2 people in motorcycle accidents within about 2 hours on the same day. This past Saturday.
They also occurred on 2 different state highways several miles apart.
One person was wearing a helmet and the other fellow was not.

I've got 2 examples from the same street in our town, one was a popular young guy right out of high school, riding side by side with a friend when they came to the local hang out the friend assumed they were pulling in and crossed in front of the other bike. all slow speed, just clipped handlebars and the guy fell and hit his head and died. helmet almost certainly would of saved his life.

The other was a young kid from out of town coming thru an intersection probably going over the speed limit, a van made a left turn across his lane and he t-boned the van. a passenger in the van said when they open his visor it looked like a strawberry smoothie. Helmet could not save this poor kid.

My older brother was an avid anti helmet guy, their argument was that they can cause broken necks, which I guess is true to some extent.
I mostly wear a helmet, as I feel more comfortable with it. Especially if I was out to tear up the pavement, if I'm just putting around town then I don't wear one.

There are many motorcycle fatalities every summer, but it seems like almost an equal number of drownings during the same time every year.

If you ride on the road, you should have a helmet on. Doing anything else is stupid.
I have hit the ground hard enough from a bicycle to know that I would not ride on the road or more than out to the field without one.
I also ALWAYS wear one when riding a horse... My sister had a horse take off on her and run under a branch. The branch knocked her off and she hit the ground hard enough to break her helmet, but she wasnt injured by it.

I don't think I'd call it stupid.

If someone rode all their life without a helmet and you tried to put one on them now, it may be enough of a distraction to cause an unsafe situation for the rider.

I say to each his own. Though I wouldn't want to see my kid ride without one, although my son has a moped now and rides that without a helmet, but so do I. Says he thinking about a real bike now, I know his mother will have a coniption but how can I stop him since I had rice burners on the road since I was 16. He's not all that gung ho for one so I hope the phase passes.

When I was first learning to ride I had an accident, the guy I was riding with (who was an experienced rider) was on his harley, I had a Honda sport bike. We just fueled up and I had my full faced helmet, armored leather jacket and gloves. He (being a harley guy) had just a skull cap so he needed to wear glasses. Well he pulled out of the gas station first and I had to wait for a car to pass before I pulled out. Well I was going 60 mph to catch up with him when he realized he never put his glasses back on and when he looked in his mirror he saw me back behind him a little ways. He didn't give me a second look to realize I was going faster then he was so he let off the throttle and cut right in front of me. Me being inexperienced hit the front brake hard and tossed myself over the handlebars. My head hit the pavement extremely hard and gouged the helmet bad and busted off one of the vents. My jacket got rashed up as did my gloves but my entire upper body was fine. My knees were scraped up as I was wearing jeans but I got up and walked to the middle of the road where my bike was laying and picked it up. Gathered myself for a few minutes and made sure I was ok then rode it home.

Had I not wore a helmet I most likely would be dead or a vegetable for as hard as I hit. I still remember the sound of my helmet hitting the road first. I also remember that even though you think your slowing down (while your body is tumbling down the road) wait till you come to a complete stop before trying to stand up. All I did was tumble harder as I was trying to stand up while rolling too fast:confused2:

NY has a helmet law, I would have wore one anyway if they didnt. I know sport bike riders catch a lot of flak from other motorists but what I have noticed from when I did ride and even now, that sport bike riders spend the money to buy the protective gear and wear it with pride while guys riding Harleys and such tend to have a more macho approach where they wear as little protective gear as possible to show how manly they are.

Should the states tell people what they can and can't do? Well, they do it every day with every thing else. I would rather the states require helmets and if it saves one extra life then it was worth it. If not for the person whos life it saved but for the first person on the scene who doesn't have to see some guys brains scattered across the pavement and have that image permantently imbedded in their mind. I know my friend was more shook up then I was at my accident. All I remember is being mad as I kept catching a glimpse of my bike sliding down the road with sparks flying as I was tumbling towards the shoulder of the road. It was a brand new bike and those plastic panels are expensive:eek:

Oh and my insurance company (state farm) paid for all the damages to my bike and also paid for me to buy all new protective gear (jackets, gloves and helmet).

I ride a Harley and wear a helmet, but when I usually take a ride it's on a less traveled country road as they are my fav's. During that type of ride I would love to not be required to wear a helmet. I don't like having the government telling me what to wear what to eat, can I smoke or can I hunt with what kind of firearm. People need to understand this because at sometime or other the government will intervene in one of their freedom of choices. Just take a look at different state laws on helmets, fireworks, firearms, marriage, you get the picture, what's illegal in one state is legal in another. Just my opinion , Too Much Government In Our Life's.
