Tractor
John Deere 1250
Going to jump right to a question. Had starter rebuilt on a 1250 John Deere tractor. Had nothing on tractor. Since rebuild it would only click with hot battery. Hooked truck up to it , with battery still hooked, and it turned over but then went back to clicking. I put meter on the battery and all was good. Hooked to ground then post on starter all good. But when I turned the key the reading dropped to like 2.3. Does this mean I do not have enough cranking amps to turn over the tractor, or is the rebuild not good? Also the cables were smoking and got very hot. Thanks

If the cables were smoking it sounds like something is shorted somewhere.

How do I post?

If your voltage is dropping that much on a good battery, you have a bad rebuild. Do you have a clamp on amp meter? It would be interesting to see how many amps it is drawing because it sounds like you almost have a direct short.
