Boy, have I got a story for you folks!

I have a rental house about 1 hours drive from where I live.
The tenant called and said the heat was not working.
The heat pump is 30 years old but has always worked great.
I usually keep a good local heating & air, carpenter, plumber and electrician on
file for these situations.
My local HVAC mechanic retired several years ago so I called a local company that works on heat pumps to go check it out.
They went out to the rental house and looked at it and called me.
The technician said that the heat pump had several problems.
He said the electronic board was shot and that would be at least $450.
He also said that there was a problem with the breaker that supplied power to
it.
He also stated that a new system might be a better investment.
He said that in situations like this they always get a second opinion.
He said that another tech (from the same place) was coming out to look at it.
The second technician called me later that same day.
He stated that he had checked the system out and indeed it was the board and
there may be other problems.
He estimated the repairs would be at $1,000 just to get it where they can
diagnose and check the system further.
He said I really needed a new heat pump installed.
I ask him to give me a price on a new system and he estimated it at a cost of $5,000.
I started calling and getting other estimates on replacing the system with a new one.
I got two estimates of $3,700 and $3,500.
I called a friend of mine in a nearby state with 40 years experience for an estimate.
He said he could put me in a new system for $2,800 but he needed see what all he
needed.
He drove over to my house and we went to check the heat pump out.
We checked the system and sure enough there was no power.
I started pulling out breakers from the service panel to see where the problem was.
The breaker was bad, I sent my wife to Lowe痴 to get a new breaker.
She returned shortly and I installed the new breaker and guess what, the heat pump worked fine!
A 30 amp $10 breaker!
I called the heat pump company and told them that I fixed it for $10 and I did
not need their services.
You cannot trust anyone these days, I was pissed!
This is why I do my own work whenever I can.
Tomorrow I call the other two places and let them know about their competitor痴 practices.
I may even take this further?

The week the step daughter & her now hubby moved into a rental the power was acting up. some outlets worked other didnt the heat was off and the stove hot water ect. (mostly all electric place) I told her what to look at first but to no avail I had to go look. the main breaker was bad in the very new HOM line SQ D panel. It was 9 PM so off to Menards I went. I didnt have hardly any tools here in town so I had to buy a new main breaker & some wire tools. I got maybe 70 or 80 bucks into every thing to fix it. I left the bad breaker there & a bill for the materials only for them to take off the rent. The land lord had re-wired this place him self and wanted to know why I had to change the breaker. I pointed out that he had not left any slack in the feeder and had drilled a large hole for the service cable access point and the rain had been running down into the panel and in/onto the main breaker shorting/corroding one side of the main. I was able to clean up the contact bars & applied electrical putty to the cable hole sealing up the problem should now be gone.

Guy didnt even thank me I told them next time to call him at 9 pm on a weekend when something goes bad...

Glad to see you found out the "real" problem! This type of incompetence at a minimum or collusion/fraud at the other end is frightening.

The new refrigerants now required will make this sort of situation very easy for con artists to pull off. Another arguement is that the new equipment which is more efficient will pay for itself in energy savings, giving even more opportunity for promoting replacements. Sadly, it hurts the reputation of professionals in the HVAC field.

Better Business Bureau might be one place to notify, another might be your state attorney general's office. Good luck.
