I goofed.

Lat fall, my A/C was acting up. I had wanted to get a package unit, anyway, so I decided to replace it with a heat pump. My heat and air guy was out of town, he usually lets me do what I can and finishes thing up. But this is a package unit, so I ordered one and hooked it up myself.

It wasn't working right, so I call him out. he said the compressor wasn't starting, so he put a hard start device on it. Well we had a mild winter, and it wasn't till summer that I realized i still have no compressor. And no heat and air guy either, I think he moved to mexico.

I call the vendor that I got it from. Well, they nicely send me a new compressor. No labor though. And I get quoted $500 to change it. Plus filters.

Shheesh. I gave $1500 for the heat pump. Is there no way to get the manufacturer to warrant the labor?

I guess I get to pay to have my heast pump fixed...

Some brands let dealers sell a parts & labor warranty. Some brands will sell the homeowner a labor warranty up to a dollar amount .If this doesnot apply to you, then they won't pay labor. Most places I do business with won't sell to you unless you are a dealer.I'm suprised that any supply house would sell you a unit unless you are certified, they are strick around here with all the Government regulations on the sale & use of freon. If you have the equip. to remove the freon, it shouldn't be to difficult for you to replace & recharge. Good luck to you.

I do my own. I thought $200 was high to swap out a compressor. Of course, I have four package units, four split systems and a whole bunch of window units to maintain. I've also started working on my refrigerators, too. I only put up with being bent over for so long before I find a way around it. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I would say that if you don't have the tools and experience to reclaim the existing refrigerant, replace the compressor using a torch, add a liquid line filter, test the system for leaks, evacuate the system, and weigh in the new charge then you should leave the job to a professional, least you might be doing it yet again.

And depending on the old compressor, flush the system b-4 installing new compressor.

Are you really sure the compressor is bad ?
There can be several reasons the compressor is not running besides a bad compressor.

Mike,

Am I allowed to paste here my reply to you from you private message?

Or I guess you could paste it in here if it would help others with policy.
