Thought some of you might find this interesting. This dog came into my clinic for a presumed spider bite. After the dead skin was removed, this gaping wound was left. Obviously, the owner was horrified. There was not enough skin left to close the wound with sutures. We had to allow for second intention healing "granulation tissue". These were very conscencious owners and cared for this wound very well, washing it daily and applying vetracin spray. Initially, we kept the dog on oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. I have seen this many times but am constantly amazed at the bodys ability to achieve this.

Pretty amazing recovery. Thanks for letting us know what a 'spider bite' could be like.

I'm intersted in your opinion of the product "Vetricin". We were skeptical but it dd seem to speed up healing on a wound on our house cat.

I think vetracyn is a good product, but nature (GOD) is a pretty amazing healer by itself.

Simply amazing! On just a hot spot on our elderly lab, our vet had us put confectioner's sugar. I have not looked into the theory behind that, it did very well in healing the abrasion. +1 On God's healing power - our methods are a distant second.

That is astounding.

I have trouble getting the spelling right. I believe it is Vetericyn. I use Puracyn and Microcyn gel for myself. I suffer from poor circulation and stasis ulcers. Those products really improve my healing and comfort. They are expensive, but I think they are worth the money. Oculus is starting to market the OTC products through online medical supplies and retail store chains. I expect it to become more affordable and available in the next year. I believe it has only been in use for less than a year, but I could be wrong.

Can you elaborate on what actually caused this
condition? was it a bite, or an infection or disease
that caused all the dead tissue?

glad it worked out, but wow, quite a shocker
for somebody I'm sure.

Wow! It is surprising how pups heal, much better than us as they don't complain like we do.

Wow,that's amazing!

I have a bison cow that got raked over by his buddy's.Big patches of raw skin on both sides. Now 2 yrs later it still ain't healed up.
Twice i tried to take her to the butcher but she managed to drop a calf just ahead of time.
I guess she don't want to die ;)

Although we are not 100% sure, we feel that the original injury was from a spider bite (brown recluse common in our area) We suspect this caused initial tissue necrosis (decay) and an infection then set in that caused a large area if infection and ultimately skin death. I removed the skin that is missing because it was in a state of decay. It was hard and had no blood supply.

Brown recluse spiders can do the same thing to human flesh ( though maybe not of the massive size of this pup's wound) The result of this dog is really amazing! Thanks for sharing this. - Mike

We are about to purchase some Vetericyn for our animals and pets.
A couple questions from your experience with it..Vetericyn.

What is the shelf life? The main content Electrolyzed Water (H2O) (99.97%
does not keep very well. Does it have a short outdate?

For our farm animals a small bottle 8 oz would probably not treat many wounds or eyes and it is cheaper by 16 oz size per ounce but if we only treated our cat or dog's eye's and the shelf life is short the smaller bottle
might really be more practical.
From the reading, I understand the Vetericyn VM is double the strength of the product sold by retailers.
The human product Puracyn appears to have the same ingredients.

Terramycin, which we have used for years for animal and pet eyes seems to be being held off the market now as our local sources and vets have been out
for a couple months and can't get it.

I got a misdiagnosed staph infection at the local doctors office one time. Our local clinic doesnt have a doctor now just nurse practitioners. I had a sore come up on the ball of my thumb and the NP told me it was a spider bite. By the time I got to see a specialist he lanced it and there was a large 5/16ths void in my hand I got to watch heal over a few months.

I have a freind that had a neigbor hood dog at his shop. It just went from house to house and didnt have an owner. He got hit by a truck one moring and it mangled his leg. They couldnt catch him and every time some one had a gun he would disappear. He showed up one evening with a knwed off sump even with his shoulder. Over the next few weekis it healed up just as slick as the rest of his coat. He later became a pet and I petted him. He rolled over and i touched the wouned area and that furr was softer than the rest. He got a name change from Dog to Tripod to.

Mike thanks for posting, any more updates? Granulation? the same as epithelialization? (sp)

Wound exposure that large and nice clean pink color. Owners did good, but obviously have a great Vet.

My daughter has wanted to be a vet since she was 5, now 22. I showed her your post:laughing: She has changed her mind after finding out how many animals she would have to put "down", I still have my fingers crossed, she's currently taking Phlebotomy.

BTW, just curious, have you ever worked on pet Rats? namely mammary tumors or fibroadenoma removal?

Info- I found locally available Vetricyn at TS. 4 oz $22 and 12oz. $32
The shelf life is suppossed to be 18 months. The local supply had 12 months remaining.
Cleared up cat's eyes in 3 days. We had used Terramycin for the week previous with no improvement. Cat was from a free giveaway day at the local
shelter. Had all the shots, neutered, etc. In a couple days developed cough, sneezing, and fever of 103. Our vet said, " bet you got her at the shelter on the free day."
She is doing good now and very loving. We got our last dog there 9 years ago, and he is the most loving dog we have ever had, too. They seem to sense they are being saved.
