I also, am sorry for your loss. I've been through that 4 times. I've recently been adopted by a barn cat (now inside), since losing my 11 year old Lab last year. He's a good cat (my first), but not the same as a dog.

Thank you we got Baron from the shelters. They were going to destroy them, but he has just been nothing more than most fantastic and I’ll have to wait to get another one and at my age I may not cause I would keep comparing them to Baron. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts

The problem with getting old, aside from not wanting to deal with training a pup. Is that you don't want to leave a heartbroken critter behind.

The solution my brother-in-law found, was to enquire at the vet about an animal that had to be given up when their owners were sent off to the geezer gulag due to dementia or whatever.

Those critters are used to being around slow moving, low energy types (not that any of you are that way!). This keeps what was a loyal companion from being sent to a shelter, with the only downside being that you probably won't get many years out of them.

My bother-in-law is on his second dog, technically his third, but he had to give the one up less than a month in, as the dog was too much for him to walk. Too big, too much energy, pulled him over several times while on a leash and old folks don't bounce.

Sorry for your loss but you are very lucky to have had such a loyal friend and companion. I say this having lost my good friend Tag this year.
You should go rescue another dog. They may not measure up to this dog but they do need the same rescuing and will give their all to whoever is willing to do so. There is an old dying dogs prayer that says please give my warm bed, my dinners, my dry house, and your companionship to another dog in need when I go.

I've spent the last two years as a shelter volunteer.

It's hard to see older people surrender pets they love because they can't even take care of themselves any longer. But I think other adopters have greater sympathy for these pets, and they seem to get adopted.

Also have seen younger people adopt pets and then surrender them two months later because they've moved to a new apartment that doesn't allow pets or they've underestimated how much care a pet requires.

I currently have a wonderful shelter dog who was stuck in the shelter after a young couple split up.

It could just be that you might still the best owner some lucky dog could have.

If I were to get another dog, it would definitely be a rescue one to save them from being destroyed as with Baron. The problem now is number one. I don’t want one right away cause I don’t want. I still am hurting from him. It’s too soon also he adapted to the fact I was gone a lot to visit my wife in a nursing home and I don’t wanna get another dog and immediately leave him for a long period of time in a strange house so it’s gonna be a gradual process, but even at my age chances are there will be another canine in the house I’ve had them all my life and they’re just part of me especially now and again thank you for all your kind comments
