I have memories of helping granpa's neighbor with hay duties.
Horse drawn hay rake. (They let me ride next to the driver)
Manual loading the hay wagon and my assigned job to jump up and down to compact the hay load.
Next was the horse drawn hay lift to load the barn attic and us kids to trample it.
Everybody had to pitch in.

Every stage of that early haying operation would make today's safety police shudder.
