My hay wagon needs a new floor. The prior owner put 1/2" plywood down and now after a few years it's time to be replaced. The rest of the structure is in good shape so it's only the floor that needs to be replaced.
My neighbor says he always uses pressure treated plywood to repair his wagons. But I've got a bunch on 2X6 and 2X8 by 10ft long pressure treated boards someone gave me. Does anyone have an opinion? Plywood vs. boards?

Thanks.

If it were I,I would go w/the boards...plywood might bow down wards between the runners after while, where boards will have small open joint to let water etc. dran off...plus more floor strenght.

All my hay racks are 3"X12" white oak stringers with 2"X6" (mixed species) laid crossways and a 2"X4" rub rail along the ends of the 2"X6"'s. All rough sawn. All lumber was fastened together with ring shank "pole barn nails". Some are as old as 20 years. They'll outlast me at current rate.

Plywood with dry hay chaff on it is mighty slippery. At least with the boards there are edges and you can leave spaces for some of the chaff to fall.

I would use the 2x6's. Here is a pic of my trailer.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll take your advice and use the 2x6 boards.

Here's a pic of the repaired hay wagon. I used 2x8 and 2x10 pressure treated. A neighbor gave them to me from a project that never got done. They were sitting in a pile under some trees all wet for about 10 years. Not a single piece was rotted. I got the boards about a year ago and just through them behind the barn. I kinda knew they'd end up on the hay wagon.
I had a couple gallons of gray OOPS deck and siding stain from Home Depot.

Nice job :)

I've just started on mine. Probably will never use it to haul much hay but for short hay rides around the farm. I had planned on replacing the rough sawn 3 X 8's with treated 2 X 10's (doubled -bolted together) but my difference is that my floor was going to be treated 2X 8's. The main difference is that I was going to run the 2X8's perpendicular to the 2X10's that attach to the metal frame. Mine is a hydraulic dump but not sure that it even works and will not use it as such. In both wagon photos, the floor boards are running parallel to the frame. Am I making a mistake or will this suffice. I've not cut or bolted yet and really need to sand the frame down for some new paint before going further. My finished planned dimensions will be 12 ft long by 8 ft wide. The tongue may need to be replaced

Thanks
