Does anyone have an opinion about this rake? I have a chance to buy one and would like to know if their has been good or bad with a JD 894 rake::D

I can't help you too much as most all the rakes I have used or seen have been New Holland rakes. I did have a friend who used a John Deere side delivery rake but I have no idea what model it was. They didn't have any problems as far as I know.

Looks to me like a knock-off of a NH-55 rake (Straight axle).

That means bolts, teeth and tooth cups from TSC. Good excuse to buy 18v impact driver for quick change of broken or missing parts. They're asking $1700 on machinefinder.com

You need a rake even if your mower will windrow, IMHO.

I prefer this type of rake over a spinner (I have a Kuhn rake/tedder combo) because the roll-a-bar will rope the hay into an easy feeding stream to the bailer. This means that if you run into a windrow thick spot or a joint with another row, the baler can pull the rope in at a comfortable feed rate. When the hay is clustered (as the Kuhn does). The hay is all loose and the baler charge can get big real quick. This can result in a UBPSPR condition code situation in the baler control module. (Unexpected but Probable Shear Pin Replacement). This is often followed by a loud bang and a secondary expletive deleted phrase invocation at the main operator station .....

I have a JD 894 that I bought a couple years ago in reasonable shape. The rake was 20 years old. It works as well as any other side delivery I have had. The only thing I dislike sometimes is the fact that the spring float mechanism makes the reel bounce alot in rough ground. I have replaced the toothbar journal bearings because of wear and replaced about a dozen teeth. I will probably replace the wheel bearings after this season. I will also be modifying it to accomodate a crank jack. It's heavy and a real bear to hook up by yourself. According to my dealer, 95% of the parts are still available.
