I agree with JDBower.

I suspect if you have any homeowner's insurance coverage for this at all, there might not be any coverage if the event is promoted or if any $ changes hands because they'd say its a commercial event.

CurleyDave's suggestion to host it at a local gun range makes a lot of sense to me.

Sounds like a fun idea to me.
I like the suggestion of having the shoot at a public range.
You can invite your friends to "join" you there and each is responsible for their own fees. There's no harm in getting a pot together for a little shooting competition. It's like guys meeting at the golf course and putting in money into a pot, but they play at their own risk. The range master can help in setting up your little tournament.

I'd be leary of having it on your own property because that includes a whole nother set of liabilities. Even if you have signed waivers it means diddly squat in courts these days. You know the way the liberal courts are going ... they can sue you for just being you if they want. A little twist and turn of the intended law by some silver tonged devil and shazam, it's your fault. It's ridiculous what they can pin on you. Just make it a mutual gathering at a specified public location. That should minimize your personal liability.

Thinking about getting a kitty together and having a best score with a pistol at 25 yards, say a first, second and third place.

Most people know or know of each other, should be friendly, and hoping that everyone will have a good time.

Would a legal waiver protect me if I go that route?

Good Evenin Joe,
Count me in if your gonna shoot skeet ! :D Heck I will even handicap and shoot my 20 ! ;)

Thanks for the response guys. I'm getting the feeling that I'll probably just let this pass and just have the smaller groups over at a time instead of having a "large event". Kind of felt that the bigger this thing could get, the greater the chances of having some sort of "problem". Having some guys joke about bringing beer dosen't help as well (two things that really don't mix well).

Hard to believe, but there really isn't a rifle range really close to me.

Count me in if your gonna shoot skeet !

I've actually been thinking of that out back for myself. Are clays bio degradeable?

May be a lucrative business venture if you think you'd have the clientele...? The ranges around here are always packed from what I hear. Like you, I shoot on my property.

Good Mornin Joe,
Absolutely ! :)

My Uncle Dave has 30 acres up the street from me, mostly open meadow up at my Vt property, and he has two benches set up in the field. The first bench is 25 yards away from the target and the second is 200 yds. He never lets more than a couple people at one time use his range ! And we allways pick up our own brass ! ;)

BTW I think your makin the right call, for what irts worth !

IMHO.. it was a supervision issue... no child as small as the one in that incident should have been holding that gun by himself.. someone needs some parenting skills in his familly.

IMO, You promote it, you can be held liable.

We just had an incident up hear in New England, young kid got killed at a class 3 get acquainted shoot at a Massachusetts gun club. They let him shoot a mini Uzi and the muzzle came over the top and he got one round in the head.

They DA went after everyone involved with criminal charges, the promoter who happened to be a sheriff or chief, the gun owner and the gun club princables. The law they applied was kind of a gray area but basically they interpreted existing regulations to mean that a class 3 gun can not be transferred to a minor even temporarily at a sanctioned shooting event, unlike hand guns as well as other firearms that minors can not normally possess which can be temporarily transferred.

It's still in the criminal stage but civil actions are sure to follow.

If your gonna do it make it as loosely organized as possible, kind of a spontaneous event, and do it at a public range like Dave said. I'd be afraid that if any serious accident occurred on your own property, I think it would be difficult to defend yourself in a civil liability case.

JB.

I looked into one a couple of years ago five miles from my house. I passed on it, and glad that I did.

To many zoning issues from a slumlord of trailers who brought a lawsuit agaisnt the county when the owner of the range died unexpectly and someone else tried to re open the range.

Three reasons why I went into debt when I bought my place...

1. I can pee anywhere
2. I can mow my lawn naked and not worry (which freaked my wife out:D)
3. I can shoot off my back porch or take a bunch of guys in the truck out back to go shooting.
