Have you ever tilled a driveway

/ Have you ever tilled a driveway #12
All I use to grade driveways is my grader blade and boxblade. I usually hook up to the blade and pull all the loose gravel out off the side of the driveway and spreat onto the hard pack. Then I use the boxblade to pull the loose gravel to potholes that do not have loose gravel near by. I would use a loader to do these but when I use the Johndeere 2210, it doesnt have a loader so I use my implements to the fullest. Once Ive filled the potholes I put the blade back on and turn it at an angle in reverse. It works great!

Every few years I grade the gravel road that is ours and the portion shared with neighbors. I use a box blade with the teeth down to dig up the gravel. Then use the box blade with no teeth, :D, to smooth the gravel back down. And I try to crown it a bit.

Just make sure you know the location of the utilities. I have one phone line that crosses the road, one deep power line also crosses, and our phone line runs besides the road. Call No Cuts or whomever is listed on your utility boxes to come out and paint the runs.

Later,
Dan

I use my rototiller all the time on my gravel driveway. It surely does loosen up all the stone, kills the weeds and renews the material. It works even in the dead of Summer when the material is packed like concrete. Then I use a landscape rake to crown and level it. Its no problem for the tiller (a 5' Yanmar). I put the gate in the full up position and run the tracktor backwards in lowest gear. This make the tiller dig into the material better without bouncing very much. It can make some noise, though. Whoever says it won't work or can't be done needs to develop an imagination, some creative thinking, and stay off the dumb pills. Now if you bought one of those little tinney tillers for grooming your cat's sandbox and leveling the sawdust in your Mommy's tomatoe garden, I could see you having a problem. But this is a solution to a situation that you don't need your checkbook for. Piece of cake.

I think it would depend upon the composition of the gravel driveway. Big boulders or fabric might make tilling less than successful.

I wouldn't try that. But anyone who does, make cetain that you have a clutch on the PTO shaft. My brother-in-law didn't and picked up a boulder into the tiller. That cost him about 3 grand for broken NH innerds:eek:. The tiller wasn't harmed though. So at least he had that going for him.:D

I use a landscape rake...Works great for me, moves the crown off and fills in the tire tracks and potholes. I do probaly 1000 ft or so (including my driveway).

I had a guy I know ask me if I would till his gravel driveway. I have never heard of this. He said it it mixes the fines up with the larger stone. I guess it is like using scarifiers on a grader. BTW I told him no.
Bill

Not intentionally.......

Don't ask :(
