Hauling a TLB on a car trailer

Here's my dilemma I'm moving across the country for work so I'm renting a 26 Penske truck and car trailer. The car trailer will hold approx 5200 lbs. My JD 870 with 8b and front blade is pushing 4600 lbs. Has anybody hauled a small machine on a car trailer?

Some car trailers only have a floor "channel" where car tires would go. They may not fit a tractor.



Penske's web site says their car carrier holds 4050 pounds. It has maximum and minimum tread widths listed.

Be sure to check the trailer you actually get. It may be different.

I already have the wheels at max width which is quite wide, I'll have to measure. I may remove the bucket/blade and get them in the truck strapped down to reduce weight if I have to, if they are only good for 4000 lbs. If anybody has done similar let me know.

Don't tell them you are hauling a tractor. Many times they limit it to auto's only.

Most definitely, my other dilemma of course is moving my 90 taurus wagon lol. It's priceless!!
I know it'll be on me if the tractor or trailer is damaged, if I leave it at my brothers it'll see 10 years of abuse in about 2 weeks.

I've hauled my 1070 with loader, weighted rear tires and a rototiller very comfortably on a rented car hauler. It had surge brakes and high pressure tires. Balance the f/a position to get the hitch weight reasonable.

No problems.

That is what happened at Uhaul for me. They listed it as a car so I might have had trouble if something happened. I loaded a ford 601 and it handled fine. But u have to make sure the track width fits.

Make sure that there are good tires on the trailer (including sidewalls) and that they are at proper pressure. It's no fun trying to find a replacement tire out in the middle of nowhere on a weekend. BTDT.

You might also have trouble lengthwise: you need to position the tractor so that there is the right amount of weight (10-15%) on the hitch.

Don't forget proper tie downs. Going across country, you might run into strict enforcement although they may or may not have jurisdiction. Both the bucket and the hoe both need to be separately secured.

moveing across country.... buy a dual axle trailer at start point. load whatever you need onto it. (it has the pluss of having a full floor for extra stuff) sell at other end of country.

my guess is the trailer rental is going to be like $1000 so you can afford to "loose" up to ~1000 on the resale at the other end. (although likely wont have to)

I had a buddy who did this, bought a trailer about 2 weeks before moving across country. per IL DMV you had 30 days to register it. drove it with no plate and the bill of sale pluss title in the glove box. sold it at the other side haveing never having to pay registration fees. Had no issues with cops durring the move although he did go through 3 "spare" tires in the cross country trip.

I would also recommend buying a trailer and then selling it when you get across the country. Just be aware of the condition of the tires if you buy one. You can add $400 to the price of the trailer if it needs tires.
As far as car haulers for tractors, I haul my L2900 on one. It is a factory made trailer and it has a 4,000 lb capacity. I did not measure the distance between the runners when I bought it and when I got it home I was unpleasantly suprized to see that my tractor was just a little to narrow for the trailer. I fastened a 16" scaffold board to the cross members and against the runners on each side. Now my tractor sits with the back tires half on the runners and half on the scaffold boards and it works just fine.
