Just bought a higher end 0 turn mower. How do the hydraulics work on the steering? Is there a gear that drives the rear wheels forward/ reverse, or is there some kind of brake (lining) action? If it's brakes, won't they wear out eventually like other linings? thanks bb

I suppose it depends on model. but the ones ive seen the controls run a variable flow valve (with reverser). there is a hydraulic motor that drives each wheel. (either direct drive or some sort of gear reduction).

the speed and direction is all controlled via fluid flow. In general there are no breaks (meaning mechanical linings) involved period. a parking brake may be offered but its likely a mechanical device on the gear'd drive train.

Depending on the model, they either use an engine driven pump thru a control valve to control torque to the wheel drive motors. Or like some of the Toro's I was looking at they belt drive from the engine out to hydrostatic drive units at each drive wheel. These individual hydrostatic units are similar to the drive units on a lawn/garden tractor. They contain a pump and motor and the hydraulic/lube fluid. I think most of those hydrostatic units are variable displacement pumps and vary the ammount of fluid they pump and which direction it goes to the motor based on the command lever position. This makes for much finer/smoother control.

As mentioned, they most likley do not have brakes, and if they do, it is probably an internal wet type brake inside the hydro unit.

thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear. it's an Everride with HD construction and hydraulics (fan cooled) bb
