No paving going on here now, but in other areas of the country has the cost of asphault paving gone down?

Close friend got a quote about 5 years ago for some work at $4,200. That same pavement was re-quoted this past summer at over 14K

I asked the John Deere dealership a comparable question about lubricating oils and he said it would take about six months for the inventory price to follow current price reductions. I don't know how accurate his estimation is, but it makes some sense that current stocks will have to be depleted first.

I am sure it has come down some, which is good for me because I held off paving the driveway.

Just remember, on most jobs the real costs walk on two legs...

That's a good question.

I went to the West Slope of Colorado about 5 weeks ago to do a Log Cabin Remodel for a developer I know there. I was suprized to here he was pouring concrete roads in an Industrial Park Developement. When I asked "Why not asphalt?" He told me "I can pour concrete cheaper."

Thats the first I had heard how much "Hot Mix" had gone up.

On another note, other than the Interstate 40 all roads nere me are gravel. The county did a 2 mile test section useing "soil cement". It is holding up very well, and has been in service for 2 years now. Terry

That soil cement sounds interesting. I did a Google search on it, but haven't found anything specific on cost savings or durability tests. I've heard of people using it for driveways, but never a county on a public roadway.

Here in upstate NY I was quoted for my drive 225' + a 10x10 pad behind the barn in the summer when gas here was over 4 dollars a gallon @ 4k, I just spoke w/ him last week about doing the job in the spring (we just got 2' of snow in less than 48 hrs.) at the current gas prices of 1.89 a gallon and he advised if gas stays in this area about 3300 so it dropped my quote 700 bucks.

I have some friends still in the asphalt business, they said that the price will not go down much because there are only a couple major suppliers of the liquid asphalt and there is another use for it that wasn't there a few years ago(I can't remember what it is). If a major road and bridge construction bill goes thru, that will not help the prices either. Demand is way down now, and that is about the only way the prices would drop much. They also lost quite a bit of work to concrete this year too, based on pricing.

Yes........all my quotes for my last project were lower than in the summer based upon the asphalt index for Pennsylvania. The contractor that I usally use said it is headed down lower in the spring. Now he owns his own plant. It is always better to get pricing from someone making there own product. I work for a large GC and we do our own concrete and while I like the idea of a concrete driveway something else to consider is a drainable paving block. I am considering a interloking paving block for my driveway. You set these in a gravel sand base and fill them with pee gravel or plant grass. You may want to check these out.
