I have an old pail of JD hyd oil that looks darker than what I'm used to seeing.

Usually a regular hydraulic(AW 46,68,etc.)oil will be pretty much clear, your UTF fluids will be different colors depending on manufacture.

what kind of oil is it? HY-Gard?

Is it new oil, or some used oil that ended up in the pail?

If in doubt, buy new. I know, sometimes I forget what/why I did some things in the past.

I think that's what it is, definately darker than stuff I've seen lately. It's in a plastic pail with a metal top, I'm thinking it's about 15 years old or more.

I am all for saving money but there is no way I would use unknown 15 year old oil in my worst piece of machinery. You have a nice tractor there. Is it worth saving $35 for to take the chance?

I can get UTF in 5 gallon pales for under $26 any day of the week at Rural King. Just not worth it to me.

Xtreme Tractor & Truck Pure Flo Hydraulic Oil Fluid 5 gal. TDH America's Farm & Home Store

Its on sale this week for $20.99 for a 5 gallon pale.

It looks clean, it's just darker. Guess I'll get rid of it, you're right Chris, it's not worth a chance. But I think TSC is charging $42 around here, that's quite a difference..
