How cold is it? As mentioned, check all the electrical connections, particularly the battey ground where it connects to frame. Another good check is to take the starter out and make sure it has a good connection to the block with some bare metal contact.

Another issue may be the "yak Fat" that the starter was most likley greased with at the factory. That is why I asked what the temperature was, as near freezing, this stuff is like candle wax... A disassembly and cleaning followed by a re-assembly with some good domestic grease might do wonders for it's performance and longevity.

As always, be carefull when working with battery main lines. The battery ground is the first lead to be disconnected and the last lead to be re-connected. Cover the battery positive connection when not actually working on it. This stuff can kill and do serious damage to people and properety, not to mention welding things together that you probably don't want permanently attached:)

Good luck

It's rare, but the battery could have been defective from the git-go. Because if this was a wiring problem, I'd expect every attempt to be "weak". But your description makes it sound more like a problem with the battery itself.

What is the output voltage under load ?
What is the output voltage unloaded ?
Have you checked the specific gravity in each cell ?
Have you had it load tested ?

Sounds like the hydraulic lift pump could be dead heading.

Also be sure your hydraulics are all hooked up and your pump is not dead headed, could be thre or 4 cranks is what it takes to make enough back pressure on the pump to slow/stop the engine.

Good point guys, I misread the OP to mean "crank right" 3-4 times. I see now where 3-4 turns might also mean 3-4 revolutions.

Look at the hydro system and if its cold try heating up the starter with some type of heater. You could even use a hair dryer. I don't thing its the battery.

Thank you very much for your response. It was the first time I tried to start without the front loader hooked up. Once I connected the tow pump hoses back together it fired right up.

Thank you all for your advise. Much appreciated.

Happy New Year.

Keep a close eye on your engine oil level. Many times when guys make the mistake you did they damage the seal in the pump that separates the pump and the drive on the engine that powers the pump. If you notice a loss of hydro oil or a high engine oil level you will be in for a pump rebuild.

What happens is the seal is damaged and it allows the pressurized hydro oil to leak past it and find its way back to the engine oil pan. Its called DEAD HEADING. Essentially what happens is with the hoses unattached there is no where for the hydro fluid to go so the weakest point gives. Sometimes its a hose, sometimes its the pump case, but usually the seal.
