Harbor Freight Tools that don't suck

US General IS HF. It's that simple. They use contract manufacturing to build stuff. Yes, the boxes are awesome. I have one too.
Bought a four drawer chest on sale for $159 marked down from $220. Found the exact same box on sale at Sears for $299, marked down from $329.

Two things.

First, the 50 piece box 'O rags for $9

Pack of 50 15" x 13" All Purpose Shop Towels

is a great deal. Sometimes it's on sale for $8.99 and sometimes more but I don't pay more than $9.99. The rags are thick and durable and I use for things that aren't really dirty or greasy and use them one time. Sometimes I carry one in my back pocket to dry my hands or wipe off a tool. When they get dirty enough I use them for something nasty and them they they tossed or burned. Great rags at a great price.
...

.

This is my post above and my suggestion about their pack of 50 red rags for $9.99. News flash here, I was in a Sam's Club today and saw packages of 100 of what looked to be the same rags for $16.99. That's way cheaper than Harbor Freight so just thought I'd pass along this update.

Harbor Freight is not what it used to be. New pricing has raised the cost of doing business with them. The question used to be if the product would last long enough to do the job you bought it for. Now you have to shop the price because it can be bought cheaper someplace else.

Yeah. As I posted hundreds of posts back, I bough the identical table saw on sale at Lowes considerably cheaper because it included the stand. Caveat Emptor.

Costco and Sam's Club can be much cheaper than HF if you are willing to 1) buy the extra quantities and 2) wait for the item to appear on their shelves. Costco also has far better return policies and does a much better job of assuring reasonable quality. HF obviously has a much better selection and allows you to buy a package with 3 items in it rather than 300.

Still not a bad price from HF for 50. Most of the bundles on Amazon for a similar price are only 25 pcs.

I've been getting that style of shop rags for years...red ones, white ones, even had blue ones a long time ago.

Sure beats using my old socks

Here's even a better price by volume

Lifetime supply

1000 for $129

Free Shipping too :D

Wow, 1000 rags for a great price. What a great deal. If I were only 15 or 20 years younger. :D

They've been opening so many stick-and-brick stores here in the Mid-Atlantic, I hadn't realized they still aren't nationwide.

Their website says 600 stores, and Wikipedia says they're in 47 states. I remember first seeing flyers on inexpensive newsprint as far back as the late seventies/early 80s. As far as catalogs go, the first thing that pops up on the website these days is a "Receive Free Discount Coupons and Catalogs" window. Maybe that's different from the catalogs Chopped refers to. Or maybe they've blacklisted a few zip codes.

I used to get one or two a week. then once the store opened All I get now are email in store coupons. But yes even my buddy here doesn't get anything at all. And he doesnt even know how to us a computer. I assume they made a business decision. to not have the mail cats and loose some customers and then they would balance that loss out with the store sales.
This is how I (we) feel thrown to the curb here. We supported HF for years...Maybe soon they will come to EBAY and I can once again purchase.

HF in my experience has a lot of trouble with subscriber lists. I used to get emails and offers all the time. Then one day I decided to pay the extra and sign up for their insider club (or whatever it's called) and all communication stopped. Several complaints at the store and even by calling HF home office (that was an experience) failed to resolve the issue. I finally got back on their mailing and email lists by dropping the insider club. Go figure.

A couple years ago they started asking me to bring in my mailed flyer so they could scan the label to insure I continued to receive them. Now they ask for my phone number when I check out, and they verify my name and address on most purchases. I think this is to keep mailing ads to customers who are using them. I get plenty of mail from them.
On their website, at the bottom under Customer Service, there's a link to Request Catalog. You can sign up for mailed catalogs and for emailed coupons.
