Kind of worked, but the first set I made weren't straight and I ended up breaking one because it dug into the ground. They did work great for light work. Not sure what the breaking weight is though.

You can build them stronger by using
2x3 & 1x3, 2x4 & 1x4, 2x6 & 1x6 , 2x8 & 1x8, 2x10 & 1x10 , or 2x12 & 1x12.
