I put a hand lever on my foot brake today. Nothing fancy, just took a piece of rebar and ground it smooth to take two cable fastening u bolts minus the sliding piece. The rebar is up against the pedal with a u bolt below and above. Behind the pedal I've got a 3/16 piece of flat stock drilled to take the bolts. Tighten the 4 nuts and the rebar is clamped tight. I had bent the rebar earlier by hand in my post vice so that it is in a good position to use. I just have to put a plastic or wooden knob on the top still. It works great.
For a year now I have been driving without using the brakes. With my hip arthritis it is hard to have one foot on the clutch and the other on the brake. No problem now.

Earlier I had bent and attached another rod- cold rolled I think. When I tested it, it snapped (1/2" square). I cooled it too fast after heating it with the torch is my thinking. -Made it brittle. Then I started looking in the scrap pile and found the rebar- tougher!
