Any advise on barrel length? I thinking stub nose or no more than 4".

And since we are talking revolver would you stick with Colt and S&W?

David
Yes, and yes.

Just a thought but the old model 29's are fairly cheap in good used condition.

One in 44 magnum caliber can stop just about anything on the planet but for home use there is a large variety of 44 special ammunition available that would be ideal. Plus the 44 special is nowhere near as loud or heavy recoiling as a 44 or 357 magnum but every bit the man stopper just due to the size of the bullet.

Just a thought.

I like the grip on this model better than most current revolvers too. It just feels better for some reason.

IMO, I would say NO LESS than 4". Points easier, better/easier sight alignment and more awareness and control of where exactly it is being pointed. The added weight is also forward so this will dampen felt recoil a bit and make it more comfortable to shoot.

As to manufacturer, of the two mentioned I would say S&W. I am also partial to Rugers...

I talked with her last night about going to a gun shop and letting her handel a few pistols. She is getting kind of excited about learning to shoot and handel a gun. I have confidence she will master the hand gun and will learn to shoot, load, clean, and handel safely.

I'll let you know what she picks out.

If it's to be a house gun only (no concealed carry), I'd go for a 4" barrel, no longer, no shorter.
The gun I would recommend would be a Taurus 627 Tracker in Stainless Steel. These hold 7 rounds of .357 or .38 and aren't particularly heavy for a gun this size. There's also a built in trigger lock if you have kids...but I'd rather unload it then use the lock.
I've had the one pictured for...7 or 8 years. It's been a solid and accurate handgun.
One caveat...this gun is ported which really helps with recoil. The trade off is they are louder the a non-ported gun. .38's aren't bad, but .357 Mag's definitely make an impression.

David,

Since its a home defense weapon, 4 inches is good. I had a Ruger GP something or other years ago in 357 which was good. S&W was the other one I was thinking about as well.

As others have said, their wifeys and mine had problems with the slide. Its not hard but for some reason it is. My wife finally got the push/pull down. I think she was trying to squeeze the slide to get it to go back. But she has the hang of it now but it took some work. Which is why I say revolver for home defense. My wifey had other requirements thus the autoloader.

Now what you REALLY need is what WTA is shooting in his posted picture! :D:D:D

Let her try them all out in the store and see what works for her. Especially the slide on the autoloaders Make sure she can work the cylinder/magazine release as well as any safety/hammer drops without haveing to move her hand off the firearm. She should be able to operate the weapon easily. It should fit her hand. That is most important. Then caliber. If she can't shoot it well because it does not fit or because she can't operate it easily she aint gonna practice which means she ain't likley to hit if she needs too. Caliber comes second. 9mm/.38/.45/.40/.38+/.357 will get the job done.

Have fun,
Dan

I got a nod from the wife that she wanted a pistol, so I walked into a local gun shop and bought her a PPK. She doesn't carry it, doesn't shoot it, probably doesn't like it although I don't think she would tell me.
She does not like my S&W model 29, even with 44spls in it, not even close.
If we have a problem around the house, she grabs the Contender that has a .410 barrel on it, with the 3" chamber.(versus 2.75") Despite my array of weapons available, she grabs what is comfortable to her and with that she is capable of shooting it without fear. When I am not home, snakes beware!
A .22 magnum with a nine shot chamber is the second choice for her, but I don't remember the last time she shot it.
I keep a Ithaca pump (class III weapon) near my bedside. With less than 22" overall length and a 12" barrel, it is reasonably easy to handle in close quarters and doesn't require much aiming. My wife asked me while out shooting one day why I chose that instead of a "machinegun". I took both out, and fired rounds into a door removed from a tractor trailer. A .223 with 19 of it's friends does a lot less damage than a single round from a AOW with number one buckshot. I choose number one for the added number of shot versus 00.
Now if I could just find a tractor that she is comfortable with...

i got for my SO, when leaving for annual go-back-home trip, EEA 2" in 38sp. It was under $200 and for the night stand gun it is good enough.

4" revolver is about the perfect size. (probably why they made millions). I would go no shorter, it's MUCH harder to shoot a snubby. You also lose a lot of velocity out of a short barrel. Again, it's not a concealable weapon, it's a house gun, small doesn't matter, just grip size.
I would not go Colt. I love my Colt's, don't get me wrong, but
a. Colt hasn't made a revolver in 10+ years (probably closer to 20)
b. Thus there aren't many gunsmiths that work on them.
c. They have gotten crazy expensive.

S & W made millions of revolvers, there are tons of police return model 10's and other .38spl ones. I think last time I saw a nice model 10 police return it was under $250 (last year though, could be more).

Ruger is a distant second. They don't ever break though.

I got my wife a Taurus .38 special 5 shot revolver for mothers day. She loves it.

jimg was refering to the glock 19 and 17. Good little 9mm autos. the only difference are a longer barrel and grip on the 17. My wife has small hands and the Glock 19 fits her just fine. She is a good shot with a SA 45 Long Colt, how I don't know except I have always felt that their grip was too small, at least for me. The most comfortable gun for me is a Glock 20, 10mm auto. It is a double stack and with a Hogue slip over grip it fits very well.
