Today while mowing the yard, my GX335 just quit on me. It makes a terrible grinding noise when I try to go forward or backup. It makes the same sound when I turn the steering wheel (has power steering). What should I look for? Is it the pump for the hydraulics of something? The fluid in the transmission looks fine. This mower has been bullet proof for almost 500 hours. This started today with no warning, just all of a sudden. Any help is appreciated.

I would google (stripped brake shaft spline and stripped pulley hst).

That was indeed the problem!!! I got lucky too in that the splines on the shaft from the transmission were in good shape. Only the pulley was stripped inside. It looks like the nut that holds the fan and pulley to the shaft had worked itself slightly loose. This probably added to the issue as well.

Pulley ordered - this should be fixed once it comes in!!

Found a great thread on the repair here (very similar to my 335)
