I just rolled a whopping 6 hours over on my 2210 and am already replacing the hydraulic filter. I was doing some loader work an must have exposed a root that got up and smashed my filter. Is it just me or the filter in a bit of stupid spot? Does anyone know of a guard avail for it?

Yeah, that filter is in the low spot of the rear. Probably have to fabricate a skid plate of sorts.

I've been concerned with the fuel filter also - hangs very low in an exposed place.

<font color="green">It doesn't take foreign objects like rocks or roots to damage the filter given its location on a 2210.

I put a good sized dent in my hydraulic filter just slidding the mower deck under the tractor to put the deck back on. Felt like an idiot afterward but then thought that John Deere could have found a better place to locate the filter or as you suggest provide a guard. Then again John Deere came up with the transmission cooling fan made of plastic on the 2210 that is just waiting for a stick to get pushed up into it and break it.

No offense meant to the John Deere engineers. I suspect they were working within parameters to keep the cost of the 2210 down. For the money its a great tractor.

Is the hydraulic filter in such a precarious position on other John Deere compacts?

I've hit mine with the MMM too. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Has anyone investigated the feasablility of a filter relocation kit like the later model Ford trucks have? They move the filter from the bottom front of the motor to the fenderwell. All one would need is 2 adapters, 2 hoses, and a bracket. If I get a chance, I'll look into it.

I've had the dealer tell me that customers have slide the MMM under the tractor and snagged the oil filter with the upright on one of the wheels /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. I’ve only slightly dented my filter when I forgot to disconnect the PTO shaft for the MMM. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I had the same problem with my 445, although it seemed like it tucked back towards the rear axle better. It looks like the two-speed hydro pushed the filter farther forward making it more vulnerable. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Maybe we could design a filter guard / belly pan that would protect the filter and the plastic fan for the hydrostat? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe in my spare time. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It is probably a good idea to keep a spare filter and a couple gallons of hydrostat fluid on hand just in case. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi, Mike. I dented mine repeatedly on my 2210. On my 4110, the filter is mounted transversly and tucked up a little higher. The mower deck cannot bump it but a properly motivated stick could find it--or anything else, for that matter.

The hydro tranny on the 2210 is a "Tuff Torque" brand box. Off the top of my head, I don't recall if my 4110 tranny is a Tuff Torque, or not. It's too late for me to go to the shed to check and my manual doesn't specify. Anyone?

I've replaced that stupid plastic fan already. A $7.50 part and three hundred bucks of labor to tear the whole tractor down to get to it. I just came from the dealer today with a new hydro filter because I dented it. $25 !!! Does any one have a cross reference # for a non JD filter that won't cost a arm and a leg for ????

I've always thought the hydraulic filters were in strange spots - on my 4600 it's under the riding platform (behind the step). At least the rental/armor kit provides a shield for it.

Another interesting design point - to change the radiator fluid on my 4600 I had to reach a petcock valve that was behind the muffler pipe, behind two returns, and wedged just in front of the fan. It was plastic and was made to be turned by hand - if you could take the engine out to get to it. Therefore I had to use a needle-nose to twist it slowly to take it off... Not the smartest thing when you're dealing with plastic.

Oh well. I guess you can only put things in so many places on small CUT units.. but don't feel bad - even a 4600 has issues like a 2210.

Don't ever try to blindly unhook your Mid-PTO shaft while the engine is running. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif You'll feel the fan. Hmmm, maybe that's why it's plastic...

Yea I was pretty surprised at how much that thing cost too. I tried looking it up in a cross reference book (FRAM) a while back, with no success. Most filter makers have cross-referencing on their web sites. I haven't looked there in awhile, but it's worth a shot.
