Hi all

Got another GT2550 the other day used. The owner says he never changed the trans fluid. Other than that the unit looks to be in great condition. He maintained it well other than this issue. The tractor has 312 hours on it.

So, the question is, do I go ahead and change the trans fluid now? Somewhere I read that if it hasn't been changed, don't do it.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks

Tom

owner's manual should give you the skinny on service schedule for tranny fluid/filter change. If you don't have the manual, get the tractor's full technical model number and serial number off the ID plate/decal located in the cavity under the tilting seat and going to URL PDF Manual Web Archive ..... enter requested data; d/l free manual in PDF format. Good luck.

So the fact that it has not been changed ever should not be an issue?

well, you can go ahead and depend on "somewhere i read" or follow the manual's schedule. Yer nickel.

I would change the tranny filter and fluid

I'm not too sure about the 2550, but the lesser models (1000 series) usually have the TuffTorque transmission which is not intended to ever have the fluid changed (no drain/refill provisions). As you can see in the buzzillion-post TuffTorque thread, many have removed the transmission and figured out ways to drain and refill them, but with mixed results.

Well that's my usual rule of thumb on older OK running machines...leave well enough alone. But 300hrs is still kind of new and after a good warm up I'd change the fluid and filter with the right stuff. Close to 700 hrs on ours and it's on its second and final hydro change.

I would certainly change oil and filter, and then get back onto the 100-hour schedule. The machine may run with the old oil, but close tolerances and materials require clean new conditions, my opinion. You will drain out old oil, plus who knows what else, condensation, water, bugs??? Oil cheap, new tranny not cheap.
