Hi, everyone,

I've had my new 2544 for about 2 months now, and have almost 8 hours on it. It's been more than a little dry here in northern Illinois, so there hasn't been much to mow. I bought it after looking at everything (JD, Simplicity, all the lower end MTD stuff, Wheel Horse, Toro, etc.) and definitely realized that is was by far the best bang for the buck. I purchased it through a local Cub/JD dealer and they were great. I pat myself on the shoulder everytime I mow with it.
Overall, I just love it. It's powerfull, quiet, smooth, and handles very well. It cuts like a dream.

Some observations:

1) The headlights fill up with dirt inside. Yes, it's been VERY dry and dusty, but I can see they will be pretty well gunked up quickly. My headlight wiring didn't have the heatshield issue, though. The prefilter on the air cleaner also loads up really fast.

Does anyone else think that Tecumseh's "Kleen-Aire" airfilter system was cool? It took air from under the blower shroud that had all the dirt flung out of it by the centrifugal action of the blower. We had an old push mower with that setup and I don't think I ever cleaned the air filter. It never got dirty!

2) Had to level the deck a bit and lower the gage wheels to set it up for my mowing. I don't mow lower than '4' and usually prefer '5'. Tall grass is healthy grass. If kept well fertilized, weeds don't have a chance.

3) Once the gage wheels were set, you can't lower the deck beyond 3 without them hard on the ground. No problem there, but this caused an interesting related problem. When removing the deck to do my first oil change, getting the deck off was easy. Pop the rear pins and front mount, remove the belt and presto! However, getting the deck on was another matter. I fought for half an hour trying to get the rear pins back in place. It just wouldn't go. It appeared the deck was about 1/4" too high to line up. Well, it was already on the ground (on the gage wheels) so that was as low as it would go. Finally I had the idea to jack up the back of the tractor. Put my floor jack under the tranny housing and lifted up the back end so the rear wheels were about 1" off the floor. I was then able to put in the rear deck pins in 30 seconds!!!!

So, if anyone has the gage wheels set down properly to mow at 4 or higher, you may have some difficulty getting the deck back up and mounted.

Otherwise the oil change went just fine, even with the supplied tubing. It just took some patience to get everything lined up and routed. Definitely requires getting the deck off, though. Good time to inspect the blades, belt, clean it, grease it, etc.

Next will be the hydro filter change. I see my transmission is a good bit overfilled from the factory, so I should have some surplus to play with if I'm quick getting the old one off and new one on. I'm using the NAPA Gold Wix equivalents. Not really cheaper than the OEM items, but I just like Wix filters.

Well, enough rambling for now. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for all the great information. It's made owning this machine far more pleasurable.

Howdy Chris. My 2544 is a dusty dirty mofo as well. I blow off the air filter pre cleaner about every 3hrs of use & my headlights get dirt in them as well. We've had a VERY dry season in the Buffalo NY area as well, so I'm sure that's contributed to the dust/dirt. It tough to keep these machines clean the way the cooling air flow is directed. I think you'll find you dont need to add any trans oil on the first filter change since they are overfilled, but read the other threads on the trans filter changes as you will loose all the oil if you do not take precautions.

Thanks, Joel. Yes, I've read those tranny filter posts, so I'm prepared! Looks to be a piece of cake, though. It's cool to have a hydro system that is properly filtered and easy to service.

Has anywone else noticed the iron housing for the transmission has a big MADE IN CHINA stamped on it??? I had a sneaking suspicion of it as many many companies have gone to China for iron castings. Why wouldn't MTD, as they are one of the leaders in how to make something cheaper?

Nothing wrong with it, of course, as long as they contracted a good foundry using quality iron and proper finish machining.

Indeed, I'm impressed that MTD can put out a machine of this quality at such a low cost. The sheer volume of products they produce must give them some good buying power.

I took a long look at Simplicity machines before deciding on the Cub, too. I used to live very near Port Washington, WI where they are made. I just couldn't see spending $3500 on a Broadmoor, as it is built more along the lines of the 1000 series Cub machines and they are 1/2 the cost!!! The Simplicity ZTR machine, though, is really sweet, but it's $4k also....

Chris, I know whacha mean about the Chinese castings. I noticed it right away on my 2544. The good'ol US of A gets castings made to spec cheap, boats them over and machines the casings here. My brother-in-law works for a large compressor company where he spends probably 4-6 weeks a year in China, making sure their 'contracted' castings are made the way they want. It's a different 'world' over there /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. The foundries are ISO certified w/ not a hint of OSHA or EPA! Hopefully one day we'll (once again) figure out how to run foundries economically in the US.

On my 2042, they at least put a nice big ol' "Made In USA" sticker on the back of the seat! I'm sure the tranny casting is chinese though...

I use WIX filter as well. I feel that are the best for the money. I'd take a WIX over other higher priced filters.

Congrats on the new Cub!

Don't take this as gospel, but the oil filter is 1516 and transaxle filter is 1040, both the NAPA Gold series. Don't think you'll save money, tho, as the oil filter at NAPA was just as expensive or even a little more than the authentic Kohler filter at the local Farm and Fleet. But, I know the Gold filters are some seriously nicely made units, so I can rest comfortably. I think the tranny filter was $14 or $18!

If you don't have a NAPA nearby, Carquest premium filters are WIX/NAPA gold filters. Yep, the carquest premium trans filter ran me $13 IIRC. I'll probably changeout the trans filter every other year. I havent desided yet. The trans oil is as clear as cooking oil with 25hrs on the ticker.
