I would like to grow a "little" horseradish, but from what I've read this may be difficult since the plant is so prolific. My usual online seed/plant sites sell packs of 5 roots for $$, but I think that may be 5 family's lifetime supply.

If I bought a single root from the grocery store, do you think it will grow?

Not sure, It may, if not check out nourse farms, i bought some blackberries and asparagus from them and can rate them A+. I think they also sell horeseradish and they have a section on growing it.

That's the site I was looking at - 5 roots for $10. Not being cheap, but with shipping ~$6, I considered it and initially discounted it. I may end up going there. Thanks.

Find someone that has it allready, be nice, and more then likely they'll give you a few roots to start. I just got 12 roots from a friend. He is having folks dig a bunch because it spreads like wildfire. My last plants I got from a co-worker{at the time}, I buried them while digging out my pond:mad::(. They grew quick and were huge.

The trick for a nice horse radish is to give it bottom. Dig a hole, cover the bottom with big tile or bricks, fill it up up and plant. The theory is that the root stops growing down and grows thick.

I've seen horseradish roots somewhere like WalMart or one of the big box stores, probably in the same area where they had bulbs and stuff. I bought mine a few years ago from one of those cheap nurseries that advertise in magazines. Be sure to plant it where you want it. I planted raspberries too close to mine and now I have raspberries in the horseradish and vice versa....should make an interesting salad dressing.

Grinding your own fresh horseradish is a treat. Especially if you happen to have a stopped up nose. If the smell doesn't open your sinuses, try a teaspoon of the fresh stuff.

The secret to keeping horseradish under control is NOT to run a rototiller through it. Every piece that breaks off will grow. My grandson and I dug over 100 roots out of our garden last fall and sold them to someone wanting to grow horseradish as a cash crop. The 100 roots came from the the 3 or 4 roots that SOMEONE ran over with the rototiller several years ago.

Ouch it sounds like bamboo. Might be a good container plant

Cut the bottom out of a 5 gallon bucket, dig it in flush with the ground, & plant inside the bucket. Or cut some 18" rings from plastic 55 gallon drums & plant the same way. MikeD74T

I don't know where in the Mitten you are, but folks around here just give you a chunk. Take a shovel and split off a root. Water it and it is fine. I got enough. If you're close enough, stop by and get some. Kinda like rhubarb.

Look for someone else growing it -- in no time you will have a century supply for a family of 500:eek::eek:
Rhubarb is different -- you can always give it away:thumbsup:
