BTDT, but I was lucky enough to catch it before I bent the shaft, just tore up the shield.

Well, I discovered what bent my grooming mowers drive shaft. I lifted it too high and the shaft hit the roller.

Looking at how far back the mower is tilted, I think you would benefit from a hydraulic top link. If you used the top link to tilt the mower forward before lifting, I bet you could get full height.

I use my hydraulic top link all the time when bush hogging, and for many other implements as well. The bang for the buck is amazing.
